Cristiano Ronaldo has released a press statement on his social media handles and finally explained why he walked out of Portugal’s national team camp …. he said he left because head coach Jorge Jesus broke the promises he made to him.

He said that after the 2026 World Cup, he had already prepared a farewell letter and intended to retire, but the President of the Federation convinced him to stay. He said he supported Jorge Jesus’ appointment and was genuinely happy when the coach was announced.
He said their first meeting was positive: the coach told him his presence was “fundamental” and presented a clear plan for his participation, including which matches he would play and how his minutes would be managed. He said the coach later suggested he skip the away games in Norway and Denmark, but he refused because it would set a bad example as captain.
He said everything changed in Norway. According to him, an assistant called him during lunch, and the coach asked if he could play 30 minutes. He agreed, warmed up from halftime, and watched the minutes pass without being called. He said plainly that the coach broke his word.
He admitted he did not greet the fans afterward and apologised, saying the frustration was his alone.
He said that two days later, he met with the coach and Simão Coutinho, and they agreed the coach would publicly clarify the truth in a press conference. He said the coach even asked him for a hug and promised to repeat everything he said privately. But he explained that the press conference was the opposite as it was aggressive, dismissive, and nothing like what was agreed.
He said this was the second time the coach broke his word, and that was why he left the camp. He apologised to his teammates and to Portugal, saying breaking one’s word has “a defining impact” on him.
He said the Federation must punish him without excuses because he is captain and must be held to a higher standard. He insisted he has never interfered in any tactical or technical decision in his 25‑year career.
He said he will still be available for Portugal after serving whatever suspension comes, as long as he is fit and performing for his club. He promised fans that a proper farewell will come someday, but right now, he wants to compete.
He ended by saying it is “the purest of truths.”
The coach was setting him up for something bad and his impatience and lack of wisdom blinded him to the gimmicks.....I pray that this passes quickly for him....I don't know if he can work with the coach after this
