Growing up, I used to sit with my late dad and watch television, especially the news. I loved listening to newscasters pronounce those big words, and I would try to repeat them. One day, I heard the word ambassador and asked my dad what it meant. He explained it in the simplest way. I asked if ambassadors were always travelling, and when he said yes, I immediately decided that was what I wanted to become.
Life had another plan.
I didn’t become an ambassador in the official sense, but my career has taken me to different countries. Anytime I travel for work, I see myself as representing Nigeria in my own small way.
I’ve always been curious and open to learning. I worked in architecture and engineering, had an IT background, and was studying International Business Management. So when I lost my job in 2021 after a disagreement with my boss, I knew I had to find another path.
I stayed home for almost two months, working without pay, until I finally decided to leave. I started applying for jobs on the mainland because Lagos traffic would finish me if I had to commute to the Island every day. Then I saw an advert for an Executive Assistant role to a Senior Partner in a law firm in Obalende. It wasn’t too deep into the Island, so I felt I could manage it. I applied.
After the first interview with HR, I was invited to meet the Senior Partner. and what started as an interview turned into a full conversation about our children, family, current affairs and everything in between.
At some point, she told me I was very versatile and asked if I had ever considered communications. I said yes. She then asked if I was available for another interview that same day and recommended me to someone in the communications and PR industry. It was only later I discovered he was her husband.
I went through the process like everyone else and after three interviews, my appointment letter arrived.
That was how I entered PR and communications.
I wasn’t looking for a career in PR. I was simply looking for a job.
I wasn’t looking for a career in PR. I was simply looking for a job.
Sometimes you think you’re searching for one thing, but life is quietly redirecting you to something else...I am sure you understand what i mean? Or should i simply say that man proposes but God disposes?
ITS RON

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed every bit of your Potpourri!!
👏 standard!!
That's the uncertainty and beauty of life we all have to accept and live with. Sometimes we end up in places we never envisaged. I have learnt never to force things, for whatever is meant to be will eventually be in the long run.
ReplyDeleteThere's a quiet peace that comes when you stop forcing and just allow life to unfold. We make plans, but life often has its own wiser itinerary.
Accepting that uncertainty doesn't mean giving up, it just means trusting the timing. What was meant for you has a way of finding you, even if the road looks nothing like you imagined. Most times you found that letting go has brought you to better places than forcing ever did.

Never give up because GOD is still saying something 📌
ReplyDeleteThis is such a sweet read. And yes, man proposes, God disposes is exactly it. You weren't looking for PR, PR was looking for you. That's how the best careers often start, not by searching, but by stumbling into where you're actually meant to be.
ReplyDeleteYou write so well and that makes this column so enjoyable. Catch ya, next week.
