Things You Need To Know About BVN

Bank Verification Number, BVN, is a CBN initiative to check fraud in the banking system by giving every customer in the Nigerian banking system a unique identification number that can be verified across all banks in Nigeria.

*Your BVN gives you a unique identity that can be verified across ALL Nigerian Banks (it is not peculiar to one Bank)

*Your Bank Accounts are protected from unauthorized access

*It reduces fraudulent activities on bank accounts

*Gives easy access to Banking operations

*Your BVN is accepted as a means of identification across ALL Nigerian Banks

*Registration in one bank covers all accounts the individual might have in all other banks

The deadline for registration is Tuesday, 30th June, 2015.

How far have you gone with your BVN registration and what challenges are you facing with it?

What happens to those in the diaspora with accounts?

  3. All banks have a type of account called the NRN (Non Resident Nigerians) now some Nigerians opened their accounts through this medium ie from diaspora, while we have some customers who opened their accounts in Nigeria and have relocated. Now for those whose accounts were opened as NRN, their accounts will not be restricted. All other NRN customers need to have their accounts profiled same way.

All you need to do is provide an id, and your utility bill (notarised) or bank statement.
Well different banks have different policies but I blv this is a standard policy.

You can contact your customer care for further enquiries.

    4. Mystique, My a/c is also with Gtb and they told me I'm exempt. You need to update ur account to nrn as someone mentioned earlier or make sure that the address on ur a/c is a foreign one. Gtb will send u some forms and ask for utilities/notarised bank statement from wherever u are. So no need to go to naija.

    1. Chilax guys, for those abroad no ish just dnt fall victim to mails instructing u to click any link to do it online as those re fraudsters. Bvn has to b done physically as ur thumb prints re needed. Just ensure u migrate ur account to d unit of ur bank that handles customers abroad like my bank firstbank we call that unit diaspora banking. This is so they ll ve u on their data base as a customer abroad and u will b advised on how to go about it once cbn gives d directive. I repeat do not do it online, tell ur pple not to. Cos once u compromise ur online banking details such as ur token generated digits or ur password my dear OYO is ur case. Forget dat d mail came wit ur bank's logo if u click on d link it gives u another address besides any security mail or important mail from ur bank must come wut ur name on it. Pls do not be a victim of their blast

      "Good day Sir/Madam,

We acknowledge the reciept of your mail,

The Bank Verification Number (BVN) project is an initiative aimed at improving overall security of transactions in the Nigerian Banking Industry. To ensure the benefits of this initiative are harnessed, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has stipulated a deadline of June 30, 2015 for enrolment of all banks’ customers

The CBN  is yet to issue guidelines on the fresh registration of customers in Diaspora and the accounts will remain operational in the interim. For such customers who already have BVN from other banks, an online portal will soon be launched to enable validation of the number.
However customers abroad (who do not have BVNs from other banks) are advised to update your account information with the bank to enable us profile you as Non Resident Nigerian account holders as this will be the pre-requisite for the interim exemption.
Find attached the update form. Completed forms along with the bio-data page of your International passport and a notarised copy of a recent utility bill/ stamped copy of your Bank statement (within the last 3 months) stating your current residential address abroad will be sent to gtcare@gtbank.com. A bill can be notarised by a Notary Public, Nigerian Embassy, GTBank UK or a post office.

Thank you for choosing Guaranty Trust Bank.

      Regards"

Shebi na GTB send me this message?
And I did as advised. Abeg take it easy with your story. Nigerians too lie!

  14. Stellz the matter on this BVN thing is causing serious commotion in banking halls oo. Nigerians love last minute things. U need to see the queue for this BVN matter, plus the pushes nd blows that followed.
Hopefully CBN works out something for diaspora customers and find a way to tie it to ur other banks; rather than you having to stil take the BVN number to them.
All the same it's a gud initiative if it wil really curb fraud. Happy Weekend Everyone!

My challenges were, the long queues at my bank, coupled with the fact that they were shorthanded of staff.
