The amendment is part of ongoing efforts to tackle rising insecurity and improve local response to crime. It will only become law after approval by at least 24 state Houses of Assembly, followed by presidential assent.
If ratified, the reform will mark one of the biggest changes to Nigeria’s security system since 1999.

Yes!.
ReplyDeleteIt's a welcome idea but the question is: hope same individual employed into this won't be the weapon that will fashion against each State cuz hmmm..
ReplyDeleteHow I wish anyone to be recruited into this should be sworn in by God of thunder and ayelala so as not to go against the ethics...
And all police officers recruited and policing each state should come from the state they are policing. They should not come from other states.
ReplyDeleteIt won’t be entirely smooth, because it will also create disunity in the Nigerian spirit. A police officer who is currently serving can be absorbed into the state recruitment.
DeleteYou know it’s not just one tribe that lives in a state. Every state is a mix. So the idea that state police means “only our people” doesn’t hold.`But I think they should hold greater percentage.

They can recruit fulani's to police the south east, that is your wish. In my state we don't want fulani terrorists that have already terrorised my state displacing millions of people into IDP camps to also police us.
DeleteNice one, this is a welcome development đź¤
ReplyDeleteLong overdue. But it’s still a step forward. Bit by bit, Nigeria is moving toward restructuring. The next real fight? Decentralising power, giving states more control over their resources, security, and decisions. Abuja shouldn’t hold all the keys. When that happens, places like Benue can finally breathe and build on their own terms.`

May I also add, states will now recruit their own police and pay them monthly. That takes some burden off the Federal government. The governor now controls the security architecture of his state. Crimes and security lapses can be tackled faster. No more waiting for an “Oga from Abuja” to give orders before a state can act. Salaries will also increase, and all of that.
DeleteBut don’t forget the disadvantages too. Some governors will become full-blown oppressors. They’ll use the state police on their payroll to intimidate opponents and silence critics.`
I just hope and believe state police won’t end up like Udo Ga-Chi and the defunct Ebubeagu we had in the South East.
We all saw their rascality. We know how unprofessional they operated with impunity.`

ReplyDeleteI hope that's not the only thing they want to amend in that constitution.
