Pregnant Woman Tests Positive To Ebola Virus In Lagos.

PLEASE BE CALM AND DO NOT PANIC AFTER READING THIS....JUST BE CAREFUL.

This is confirmed and not 'hear say'

A pregnant woman who went for her usual check up at the same hospital that Sawyer was admitted, has just been tested positive of the virus because the same nurse who attended to him also attended to her. The nurse has tested positive too.
Two nurses came in direct contact with Mr Sawyer and one of them died this week.
The pregnant woman has been quarantined at the mainland hospital where there is an isolation emergency centre for Ebola virus victims.

*Please be calm...just take the necessary precautionary measures and hope for the best.

    1. It's been confirmed. She had her baby at First Consultant Hospital before Sawyer was admitted but had to take her baby back because of a fever while sawyer was in chronic conditions. She went to another hospital when the facility was shut down by the govt after saeyer's death. When she came to NNPC Clinic few days ago with 41 degrees fever, she lied about being anywhere near First Consultant Hospital after delivery until a nurse on routine visit saw her and confirmed that she was there while sawyer was there too. This nursing mother had 3 other children and just like other patients discharged from First Consultant Hospital when it was shut, she's had interactions with several other patients and health officials without being checked or screened first, especially interactions with doctors and patients alike at NNPC Clinic. This means the primary and secondary contacts of these people and also their primary and secondary contacts are potentially susceptible to this virus. And NNPC Clinic has closed down and sent all its patients and personnel away without testing/screening them first. I'm just resting on the hope that contacts were made while the virus wasn't yet contagious. We need help, we need screening centers and laboratories where Nigerians can check their status. We also need sensible directives from organizational heads to try screening potential carriers instead of sending them on their ways to further interact with the uninfected populace. We need help to halt the spread of this virus fast! Lord please help my motherland!!

    2. Some people and their stupidity!

Why did the silly woman lie about having been to First consultant? she didn't even think of her 4 children?

You see the carelessness of those in authority in Nigeria? In sane countries, every patient that attended first consultant hospital would have been fished out and quarantined.

      Delete
    3. why did she have to lie?

speaking the truth could save her life and the life of her loved ones and other innocent people..for the LOVE OF GOD and HUMANITY if you've got the virus let medical personeel know don't put others at risk.

A campaign ensuring people their status after screening wld be kept private. The fear of stigma will keep more people lying and the after effect of lies would be more death.

A media campaign should be put together by the LAG govt n FG quickly to address issues regarding lies, stigma and patient confidentality VERY QUICKLY OOooooo. I NEVER ROCK LIFE Oooo.

Now they have assisted Sawyer in spreading it even farther.

    2. Mena. The anon is very correct. From the news being spread on ebola FACTS it is not supposed to be contagious till the carrier is showing acute symptoms....fever, rashes, etc. So how was a nurse who was ill allowed to attend other patients?

Hey God. I think schools should tell their teachers if u re feeling ill, STAY AWAY AND GO TO THE HOSPITAL. HR should tell staff if u have a sudden high fever GO TO THE HOSPITAL, DON'T COME TO WORK. WE SHOULD TELL DOMESTIC STAFF ESPECIALLY THOSE WORKING WITH OUR KIDS, IF U DE VOMIT ABEG GO CLINIC, NO COME O.

stella, am a bit confused here.we were told it takes a sick person with ebola to transfer it to another who comes in close contact to get it....wondering if that is true, does it mean the nurses where terminally ill and was still doing their jobs...i don't see how that is possible..#TBT kinda imply that Ebola is contagious even without the host being ill..or what do you think Stella?

    1. I understand your question. There was a forum at work 2 days ago and we were told by the doctor that someone that contacted the virus BUT HAVE NOT BECOME SICK CANNOT TRANSFER THE VIRUS. If this is true, then the nurse couldn't have been able to attend to other patients if she was SICK! Which means they are not telling us everything abt this virus. I hope part of the 1 billion set out by GEJ will be used in conducting research to
      1. Confirm how this virus is spread. Let's not believe what oyibo tells us just because na oyibo talk am. We can't prevent what we don't understand.
      2. Find a cure for ebola. If they can do it, we can. No be the same brain we get? If we get brain to commit mega million fraud, why can't the same brain be used for mega ebola cure. There are researchers in Nigeria, all they need is funding. If that one hard them find, call all the traditional herbalists and see if they can get a cure. It is high time we also recognize the importance of the natural resources God gave us. Oyibo will take our natural herbs, extract the active agent, convert it to pills and sell it back to us. May God save us all.

      Delete
    2. No. By my calculation the nurse contracted it the same time with the pregnant woman. Being that Sawyer transferred it to the nurse, and the nurse immediately and oblivious to her, transferred it to the woman. So the nurse and the woman developed the symptoms at the same time. Do u get it?

      Delete
    3. Anon 11.59 u've said it all. Since we r smart enuf to do mega 419, I believe we r smart enuf to get d cure ourselves. Govt support our local researchers, talk to d traditional herbalist, fund them, they will enter bush n look for d right herbs. If we sit n wait for d Zmapp or whatever is it called to be given to us by d Americans, lots of lifes will perish.

      Delete
    4. Anon 11:59...GBAM. I am sure there is one alagbo somewhere with the serum. We really don't know the value of our local herbs. I am not a fan of agbos n things cos I don't know under what conditions they were prepared hygiene wise, but if there were standardized practices put in place for alagbos n co I bet u wouldn't catch me near any friggin oyinbo capsule.

      Delete
    5. @ Sisi Eko, I don't think you understand what I was trying to say. According to the 'experts', a carrier can only transfer it when he/she becomes physically sick (The doctor said at the forum that the person becomes too weak to do anything so you shouldn't worry if you come in contact with a carrier's fluid as long as the carrier haven't shown physical signs). So the nurse couldn't have become sick immediately she contacted it to be able to pass it unto the pregnant woman.
So I believe, and I told the doctor, that it can be transferred before the carrier shows physical signs.

This only goes to show how easy it is to contact this virus.

      Delete
    3. I agree with you. Other people might have had it but since its the same symptoms as malaria they may not have taken it seriously. Patrick's case was the eye opener. I hope they can contain it because it spreads fast.

      Delete
    4. Stella, it's possible but in this case not applicable because all the people that have contacted it so far, directly or indirectly can be traced to Sawyer.

      Delete
    5. It is all from Mr Sawyer, all it takes to spread is contact. And these people had contact with him. Some had contact with those who had contact with him. We didn't have any known individual with such symptoms, besides, the cases are all in the city where he was........

      Delete
    6. Stella u make sense but I don't agree. I think that Sawyer brought Ebola here. Otherwise we would have noticed before now if people have been dying at this rate.

      Delete
    7. Dear Stella, this disease was not in Nigeria before Patrick Sawyer came. If it was, people would have died of Ebola before he came. All the people currently been isolated or quarantined have been traced to him. They had contacts with Sawyer. First it was a hospital in Obalende. Then it was NNPC hospital. All recorded cases so far occurred on the island of Lagos.

I am too certain this disease was not in Nigeria before Sawyer came.

    8. A lot of nigerians trade up and down the coast of West Africa, some possibly getting intimate with people along the way. To compound matters, not everyone keeps abreast of the news. This thing is going to get worse before it gets better.

    9. Stella NOW u are talking!! I have been saying this SINCE. I SAID PATSAW was the first DOCUMENTED case does not make him an ISOLATED case. Gosh people WAKE UP. We are in the midst of a potential catastrophe!!!

People troop in DAILY through your porous borders, Lord only knows where from. They may have eaten bush meat or fowl sef on the journey. Bam! They get it. They may have travelled with someone who looked vaguely ill and touched him. Bam! They got it....and so on...so please let us just do the best we can and keep reminding people to wash their hands and avoid sick looking people in public.

      Gods hands

      Delete
    10. Stella I think the NNPC shd be advised to test all their staff who have had hospital visits in the last month cos I know they use first consultant as company hospital and obviously NNPC clinic. This is just so the virus is contained. Also, they shd check their records to be sure no staff who went to first consultant has been to St Nicholas cos they use it too.
God help us fight the spread of the virus.

  45. NO STELLA, MR.SAWYER IS OUR FIRST CASE. I DUNT THINK THERE WAS ANY EBOLA BEFORE HIM. HE WAS THE FIRST DEATH ANYWAY, SO IT ALL CAME FROM HIM. THE NURSES GOT IT FROM HIM AND SAWYER MADE IT WORSE COS HE URINATED ON THEM AND SPREAD HIS BLOOD EVERYWHERE BEFORE HE DIED. AND HE WAS ALREADY VERY SICKLY INFECTED..

ALSO,I THINK IS THAT EBOLA MAY BE AIRBORNE. THOUGH, IT IS PRIMARILY TRANSMITTED THROUGH DIRECT CONTACT AND BODY FLUIDS, I THINK U ARE ALSO AT RISK IF U ARE AROUND ANYBODY INFECTED, EVEN IF NOT YET SYMPTOMATIC.
IT IS SPREADING FAST IN NIGERIA BCOS WE DONT HAVE A GOOD PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEM, WE ARE NOT CLEAN PEOPLE, PERIOD. SO U CANT EXPECT ANY BETTER. FOR A VIRUS THAT CAN BE TRANSMITTED THRU SWEAT AND SNEEZING, HOW DO U CONTROL THE SPREAD IN A COUNTRY LIKE NIGERIA WHERE PEOPLE SWEAT ALL THE TIME, SNEEZE ALL THE TIME, WHERE MEN URINATE AND CHILDREN DEFECATE IN PUBLIC PLACES? LAGOS IS A SWAMPY OVER CROWDED STATE OF 16MILLION PEOPLE. NO SANITIZERS IN RESTROOMS, NO PERSONAL SPACE, PARKS ARE CROWDED. U CANT EVEN AVOID BODY CONTACT IN LAGOS. GOD BLESS U IF U DONT HAVE UR OWN CAR..

I'VE BEEN IN SHOCK ALL DAY. MY FRIEND WHO WORKS AS A NURSE AT FIRST CONSULTANT JUST TESTED POSITIVE. AND HAS BEEN QUARANTINED. SHE SAID SHE DIDNT CONTACT SAWYERS FLUIDS BUT WAS THERE WHEN HE YANKED OFF HIS INFUSIONS AND BLOOD WAS ALL OVER THE PLACE....

VIRUSES ARE JUST LETHAL. THEY CAN WEAKEN UR IMMUNE SYSTEM IN FEW DAYS. THEY ARE NON LIVING ORGANISMS ANYWAY, THEY JUST ATTACH TO CELLS WHERE THEY STAY AND REPLICATE. THEY CAN SURVIVE VACCINES AND POISONS. THEY ACTUALLY HAVE NO CURE, THEY CAN ONLY BE STOPPED FROM REPLICATING OR FOUGHT OFF BY A STRONG IMMUNE SYSTEM. BUT THIS EBOLA STRAIN, TO ME, MIGHT JUST BE AIRBORNE, IE IF U ARE AROUND SOMEONE WHO HAS IT.

    1. Chai. All these national medical institutes that have been collecting grants for years, what have they achieved? It's only in Africa you hear of cheap diseases that have been eradicated in other parts of the world like cholera, polio. What innovative medicine have they discovered in their years of existence??? Shame Shame Shame!

Even for malaria medicines, we depend on America. Now we are waiting for them to give us their Ebola potion abi?

  56. A person can incubate the virus without symptoms for 2-21 days, the average being five to eight days before becoming ill. THEY ARE NOT CONTAGIOUS until they are acutely ill (USA embassy website) I therefore find it difficult to believe that the nurse passed it on to d pregnant woman. May God help us.

    1. This thing is not rocket science- someone who doesn't have ebola yet and who doesn't have the symptoms can pass it on from someone who didn't come in contact with an EVD patient. Typical example if a nurse treats an ebola infected patient wearing gloves, she must definitely touches the body and some body fluid can be left on the gloves. Now if she takes same gloves and touches another patient, she had transferred these virus to that person. Now the nurse gave the virus to the second person but not from herself but from the patient who is already symptomatic. Now depending on how the nurse goes about disposing of the glove and other forms of protective covering she used, she may or may not get the virus. (Although I believe that if a nurse is careless enough to use the same gloves on 2 patients, she will also most probably not be careful enough to protect herself properly). If she removes everything carefully and disposes of them properly, as long as none of the victims body fluid touched her, even though she has passed it on to someone else, she won't get it. That's why some primary contacts might not get the virus but some secondary contacts will. This is my own personal understanding.

    3. Sorry for all the typos and auto corrects.
      * to (not from) someone who didn't...
      * she most (not must) definitely...
      * she has (not had) transferred...
      etc. Thanks

  57. This goes to show how carefree/dirty our health workers are. They are supposed to wash their hands or change gloves for each patient but they don't do that. They wear same glove till close of work, sharing nosocomial infections around.

I'm pregnant and so afraid cos I am supposed to be in hospital this morning for my tetanus toxoid injection. If I don't see the nurse washing her hands with soap or changing gloves b4 my injection, I'll take it out on her. Msheww.

For now, no ante natal for me, until this outbreak stops.

They should pls extend kids holidays too as the president advised till this is over.
May God have mercy on us while we do the needful to curtail spread.
