Former Nollywood Actor Admits To Security Guard Job In The US;Says Poverty Chased Him Out Of Nigeria

Femi Ogedengbe is finally addressing his relocation to the United States of America, which he has admitted was brought on by poverty.

The Nollywood actor revealed that he is currently working as a security guard and not as a gardener, which is the rumour that has been making the rounds.

He made the disclosure during a chat with Kemifilami, saying, "I have relocated to the U.S. I got there in January 2016, and my family joined me in July 2017. I relocated because I just couldn’t cope with the way my life was going for me in terms of poverty.

"I saw myself as one of the very great actors in Nollywood. In 2005, I discovered that the Nollywood industry, where I belong, was becoming more and more a tribalistic industry because a few financiers who were throwing in money for productions dictated who appear in the movies.

"So, more and more, we discovered that those of us, talking about Emeka and others, we were not getting the jobs we should get based on merit, I had to move over to the Yoruba genre and even at that, I discovered that the Yoruba genre was more like a help- me-I-help you outfit that couldn’t pay my bills, I just couldn’t cope."

Ogedengbe went on to thank God for his wife who stood by him through thick and thing, explaining that things got really bad that he was begging to feed.

"I bless God for a good wife, everything got messed up, I was practically begging to feed. I looked into it, I have been travelling out of the country since 2007, I told my wife that we have to make a sacrifice.

"I need to move out of the country and seek a greener pasture and as God would have it, the plans worked out. To the glory of God today, we are in the US together. I am a Security Guard, a job that takes care of me, my family and my people back home, while I upgrade my film-making skill.

"I work as a security personnel, I trained to be a Security Guard and I obtained a guard card, which is the criterium to work as a guard, and maybe I might own my security company soon too."

Ogedengbe is known for movies such as "Onilara" (2008), "She Is My Sister" (2007) and "She is My Sister 2" (2007).

Security is a very good job abroad, even a gardener job is really good, the two professions brings home very good salary.dont be comparing it to naija.when people in naija hear cleaning, security job, gardener, you people are thinking the naija way yeah, nahhh it's a whole new dimension abroad, these jobs are good jobs, decent with fat pay.

    2. Yes security guards and other jobs we look down on here in Nigeria earn big salary in Abroad.
I know of an area brother who relocated 5yrs ago, he bought a house worth N45million last year here in Lagos. He works as a security guard in UK
He told us that even a nanny or help over there are being paid up to 30 or 40 dollars per hour. So if you do nanny for 8hrs a day multiply in a month. They earn well there and the basic amenities like good roads and light work well

    3. @Anon 14:35...30 to 40 dollars is small....As at December 2017,my father's brother, that is my uncle takes home equivalent of naira which is #25,000 per hours worked...and he works 8 hours...Do the calculation...that is 200k....He gave me 500 dollars when he came home, and it was as if nothing dropped from his pocket..I go change the money at the rate of 360 naira to a dollar..and I got 180k...I just dey look this uncle..I say uncle na wa oo...you wen u no dey give person money when you were still in Nigeria..and he smiled and said, then he was struggling in Nigeria and earning 30k a month.....He told me,he was living with a friend ,they shared the flat rent, and he pays 100k per month ,and he did not even feel it.the friend also pays 100k per month ,so making it a total of 200k per month...This is a man that could not even afford house rent here in nigeria....I tell you, this country can waste somebody.

      God help us.

  27. It’s a good job. He could be making close to 30 bucks an hour. These jobs come with a lot of overtime. You can work as much as you want and watch the bucks pile up. At my job, they clearly stated on the job description, “You will be required to work mandatory overtime” So either way overtime is a huge factor. It’s done at time and a half. If you make 30 bucks an hour, with overtime it is 45 bucks an hour. My job has even upgraded. It’s now double time for any mandatory overtime over one time in a ten day wheel. So many people made double time 70, 80 bucks an hour for 8 hours four to five days a week because if you get hit Monday, it’s just time and a half. Then you get mandatories again on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday. All that is double time so the Man is working very hard and smiling to the bank. I can’t wait fir summer so the overtime can go up again.

  31. Dear SDK BVs, I have lived in the US for close to 20 years AS a professional in a highly paid healthcare field, a white collar job. All these stories are LIEs from these your relatives. Google salary estimator is your friend. I say and repeat there is NO Security Guard in these United States that makes $30/40 per hour. I respect this guy but he did not say he made that kind of money. The person whose uncle built N45m house did not tell you how he made his money.

Let us fact check to reduce expectations from our relatives and friends, or you will end hating that your relative not knowing that those are tales by the moonlight. THERE is no such salary rates in The US. You don't want to know what crime some Nigerians commit here in Houston, Chicago, New Jersey, New York, etc. You will not know until the law catches up with them. I own and run my own professional practice here so I know what I'm talking about. Nurses average 30/40 per hour on their feet, LPNs, kind of Assistant Nurses make $18/22 per hour, CNAs or certified nursing assistants (a job Nigerians refer to as "gbeya gbeya" where the assistant cleans the poop, baths dirty old folks is $10/$12 per hour. cashiers make $10 to $12/ hour etc. All these amounts are before Uncle Sam takes deductions for federal, state, county, Medicare, social security etc. In addition all these depend on your location and the cost of living index, so you make more in New York or New Jersey than Houston because it's cheaper to live in Houston. You need to know also that immigration is very tough especially now in America and if you follow those Houston Chicago cartels that get you someone else's Social security card to work, you may end up in jail in future. Some of those SS belong to dead people or children or were stolen through fraudulent means. This is a crime called racketeering. Beware of desperation to come to America, most of those having it rough don't tell the truth to those in Nigeria. That uncle that gave you $500 probably saved up and worked extra hours for months to be able to pose when he travels home. That's an advice you can take or leave but it's THE fact.

  34. Mrs Korkus please publish my comment. I know how I was expected to pay so many people's children school fees, rents in Lagos, etc when I was struggling to pass my exams. No one cares. If it was that easy to make money in America, there will be no homelessness. All the jobs here are on your feet. There is no American Dr, Pharmacist, Nurse, Professor etc who sits in an office. You are always on your feet and one of my colleagues just had knee surgery. Americans are the hardest working people on earth. A new college grad only gets 2 weeks vacation a year plus maybe 6 paid holidays. The more senior ones get 3 to 4 weeks after several years. All these folks that come to Nigeria to attend owambes, 40th, 50th, 20th, turning dad's body around after 30 years death are not telling people what they really do, stepping on dollars, something I personally find detestable. There is a legal way to come to America and you will prosper. Do your research, take exams in quantitative fields like Actuarial sciences, Actuarial and Math Grads from top schools end up on Wall Street. They calculate all those complex derivatives as insurance and mutual funds on wall st but I hear they have many stages of exams too. Borrow and study to pass and apply even from Nigeria when you get to a certain level, study for GRE and apply for PHD in a field in demand and the university will file green card and later passport for you. The demand Healthcare pros has fallen as they have but you may still find a way if you are willing to go to the MUAs, the medically underserved areas. Those are not fun places, Wyoming and the Dakotas are booming but have few blacks so they may be cold and lonely but if you are focused you can start there and end up where you like, say Maryland after some years of paying your due. Nothing good comes easy. Go to monster.com, indeed.com etc and you can see the salaries posted for jobs not believe any false tales that will poison your heart against your relatives. One of my friends daughter was dating a Nigerian guy in Atlanta. She said the guy bought her daughter a car cash down and I told her to ask her to return it. Shortly after the guy was arrested for racketeering. I don't even live in Atlanta but the pictures of the splurging she showed me had my alarm bells ringing. He was later deported. Please publish. I wish everyone who wants to come here God's blessings and favor. However please don't buy "oriolori".
When armed robbers literally chased us out of Nigeria ( the scourge was horrible in the late 90s and very early 2000s) and we lost my husband's best friend then to armed robbers, I remember going to my church camp and lifting all our passports to God. In all your ways acknowledge him and He will send helpers, destiny helpers to you. A company called me and asked if I wanted to sign up with them when I hadn't even taken, talkless of passing any of the exams. They were about to beg me and I said to the woman that her phone call was an answer to my prayer. I got a social security card in my name with the job within 15 days of speaking to her and 2 months of landing here. They filed for my household. Strange but true. God is able to save completely, or do whatever it takes to help those who only trust in him not combo jambalaya Christianity but Only God, through Jesus Christianity.Hebrews 7 vs 25 . If your Christianity is still mixed with sorcery and divination you will not touch God's heart till you repent and ask God to purify your heart.Pray. It doesn't matter how many are against your success, The Trinity and the armies of heaven are for you and no enchantment or divination or sorcery will stop you. Remember to keep your mouth shut and keep the plans to you and your spouse not even siblings and parents. The truth is some parents want you in Nigeria for fear of not seeing you for a while. Remember the story in Kings where the prophet told the woman to borrow her Neighbour's container but not tell them what it's for. Keep your plans with God for implementation.

  35. The only other thing is if you want to stay in America, never become illegal. Once you are illegal you can only work in the low paid underground economy. I know engineers and doctors from Nigeria working as car lot attendants not salesmen. Prepare to retrain even if it's in a community school as a welder, carpenter. Plumbers etc. plumbers and artisans make good money but you must pass their exam and get licensed. Everything legal is by licensure in America but plumbers and artisans collect at least $60 for coming out. Not for fixing anything just the come to my house fee. They then may agree on what's wrong and charge you but you pay the call fee plus the new charge so if you are good at these trades and have a college or poly education, there may be a way to get an associate degree or whatever requirements and get licensed. There are very wealthy artisans here but people also learn DIY because they are expensive.

My kid installed our new toilet seats. We just bought the materials and he did it..so you learn to be self reliant. Same with the kids raised here. No driver. A driver in Maryland earns $4k per month so most of the regular folks who pay peanuts to the driver and keep them in the car like slaves would be too poor to afford that lifestyle
