A seven-storey building has collapsed in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, with many persons trapped.
The structure which is located on Woji road in the Port Harcourt G.R.A. was under construction.
When it collapsed around 4:30 pm on Friday, up to 60 persons – mainly construction workers – were said to have been working on it. Around 7:30 pm, three hours after the collapse, emergency workers had rescued a total of 21 persons from the rubbles.
Security operatives, emergency workers, some Rivers State government officials and many concerned citizens are still trying to rescue more persons trapped under the rubble, with ambulances at the scene to whisk the injured to hospitals.

Naija and their poor infrastructures, nawah oo
Souls cannot be lost but lives can. You can kill the body not the soul. You are welcome.
DeleteLord have mercy on His people
ReplyDeleteGod have mercy!
ReplyDeleteSeven storey? I pray no life is lost oh
ReplyDeleteThe building is opposite Da Boss...
ReplyDeleteIt was a terrible terrible sight. People trapped where begging for their arms or legs to be cut so they can be free, rods coming out from some peoples body, boulders on top some. May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace
ReplyDeletethis is sad...
ReplyDeleteI pray everyone gets out alive.🙏
it's astonishing that someone with no knowledge of building construction what so ever gets to handle big construction projects all in the name of "connection".
imagine an accountant owning a construction firm and gets projects awarded to him because his brother/father is in a place to give them to him, while qualified Architectural firms get passed over.
This said accountant won't even outsource these projects to a good architectural firm oh, noooo... he would get "foremen" and "self acclaimed builders turned engineers" that have no knowledge of how much reinforcement to use in a suspended slab to run the projects just cos they are cheaper.
And of cos this accountant goes around parading himself as an "engineer".
Being an Architect is gradually becoming a joke in this country where anyone can slap his ass and become an "engineer".
Una good morning.
I hope you know you are wrong with your assertion that architect are the ones to be getting the job of building, the work of architects are to design while structural engineers are the one to construct.
DeleteArchitects are just meant to supervise a structural engineers so as to adhere to the kind of design put on paper.
Architects don’t build, they only design and give to competent structural/civil engineers who then build.
Tor, structural engineers would be for only the pillars then, and builders would do the jobs.
DeleteMummy's girl what are you talking about? Architects don't build jack, they design buildings that are supposed to be structurally sound and then the civil engineers step in and bring it to life. It's like saying that a QS is a builder 😕
DeleteAny architect worth his salt can read a structural drawing.
Deleteno one can see to the building of a house better than the one who put it on paper.
structural/civil engineers don't build. even if you were lucky to get one who does, you still need an architect to supervise.
Standard Architectural firms have structural, civil, electrical... all the engineering covered. why not leave it to them?
If you don't know something, you don't talk.
DeleteI am an architect. We design, build, supervise and make consultations on building structures. We are trained to understand the intricate details of both design and construction.
You mean I would create something in my head and not see the actualization through. Total BS!!!
Mr I’m an architect, the fact you design doesn’t mean you are the one to build.
DeleteYou lots are reasons why we are this way, your work as an architect is to design while a qualified structural/civil engineer execute your design, stop taking us backward this is what NIStructE has been fighting for all this while. I am also a qualified civil engineer and I won’t meddle into QS or any achitectural job cause I have little idea about it.
Not all architect can read structural drawing, but most architect have the idea, since the steels diameter, numbers and spacing are indicated therein. It is civil engineers who build, architectural firms don't engage civil engineers in there firms. Mainly it is a big construction company that can engage all or more than one of the design team, depending on there job scope; like Julius Berger, BCL, etc
DeleteStella this happened very close to my office. Like 10 seconds drive away. I just started by car by 4.57 pm when a heard a loud metal on metal clanging sound. We thought a plane had crashed around there. It was horrible! We saw thick black smoke or dust rising immediately. Some of my male colleagues started running towards the scene. I started going there after like 10mins cos its my route and I wanted to be sure it was safe.
ReplyDeleteOmG! It was a horrible sight!
People had just finished working there and were waiting for their daily pay when it happened.
Stella there is ZERO EMERGENCY RESPONSE IN NIGERIA!!!
No equipments, no ambulances, no help whatsoever!
The indigenes started pulling out people from the top of the rubble.
I saw some Mopol men stupidly videoing on the other side of the road.
It was like 30mins later that Civil defence came with one creaky swamp Buggy abi Excavator.
Lots of people would must have died cos the stupid ERT arrived over 2 hours later!
Stella the rods, scaffolding, piles of rubble where too much! Hope more people make it cos its a big disaster.
Amaechi warned that nobody should build high rise buildings in GRA. That building is clearly a contravention.
I really hope the owner is sued.
You are lying. The emergency response was amazing.
DeleteHow long were you there to know they didn’t arrive early cos from what you wrote, you were on your way home 10mins after you heard the sound? I doubt you stayed there or even rendered any form of help to the victims for the two hours you claimed they arrived. What form of first aid did you give? Or buy even bags of water to help the victim? Make una softly de condemn people and their work.
DeleteAnon leave the lying liar to continue with her lies the emergency response did their best. I start my car blah blah blah who ask for that info? Insensitive swine people are talking about lives you are talking about cars.
DeleteLol. You clearly don't know what emergency response is. Anything above 30 mins is no longer emergency response my dear! The first responders were civilians! I was there.
DeleteShyla, I will condemn government failure because I am a tax paying citizen so I expect the government should have systems in place. If you live in PHC then you will know that there is very poor government response to emergencies. Few months ago, A big market got burnt in ashes in this same ph,no fire fighters. Mile one market got burnt a few years back, same thing. A big company beside Intels got burnt, it was shell and total thst sent their fore trucks. I did not render first aid because I am not a trained first aider. I am not qualified to do that and can harm the person even more. However, we have NEMA workers that are PAID to handle emergencies and I should not condemn them? Rivers State is very able to afford to do better in terms of security and emergencies but they are playing politics with people's lives. Few months back,aa bus fell into the river on their way to bayelsa from ph, what did the govt do to stop thst from happening again? People drown constantly at the water sides because there are no live vests and you say I should not complain? Rivers State is collecting huge monies from tax and still waiting for Shell and total to do every thing for them. At least I am not keeping quiet about it and leaving it God's hands. I have been commenting about it all over SM so thst maybe, jusy maybe somebody will do what is right!
DeleteAre you minding them. ..just reading their response to your comment gives an insight into the kind of ignorance and mediocrity that governs their day to day existence. The type that would say a governor has tried cuz he built a few roads with THEIR money. It's scary and rather shameful that these type form a major chunk of the electorate.
DeleteU have a valid point
DeleteTeejay pls give us situation report from Ph studio.
ReplyDeleteThis is horrible 😨
Hahahaha.... RSQ has already done that.
DeleteTeejay what is funny why are you "hahahaing" like a buffoon we talking about lives goddamnit.
Deleteas at the time it happened the Rivers state government sent officials and rescue team there
ReplyDeleteaccording to reports 60persons were on the site
21 persons as been accounted for
few dead
#GOAT™
Omg!
DeleteWhen they are using sub-standard materials to built definitely it will collapse.
ReplyDeleteEmploy the services of a civil engineer before you build, they will not hear. Soil test need to be done.
ReplyDeleteUse original materials.
This is sad and many innocent people involved. Sad!
I just got there now, its a terrible scene, the response team is very bad, people are complaining.
ReplyDeleteThank you! That one up there is accusing me of lying. The emergency response was zero.
DeleteApart from workers, traders that came to collect their money from workers are also trapped, the number of people trapped ate more. The engineer and his girlfriend are trapped.
ReplyDeleteChaii
DeleteHian the engineer and his girlfriend kwa
DeleteSome trapped people are still calling for help under the rubble
ReplyDeleteOMG very horrible day for them
DeleteLord have mercy
ReplyDeleteI have one question to ask. I believe some of these labourers have years experience in building and mixing cement and sand and what ever. Does it mean they do not know when the materials are substandard? Why risk your own life for someone else? May the dead rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteThis is disheartening! My God! Why? And some people witness this? I can't the trauma won't leave me. May the spirit of the dead rest in peace God please have mercy and save your people
ReplyDeleteThis is so sad to hear.
ReplyDeleteQuite tragic with workers and vendors fully on site
