Nollywood Movie Producers And The Politics in Nigerian Cinemas

There is something serious going on between Nollywood Movie producers and Cinema owners in Nigeria!!
Something so shocking you will not believe it if i start.

So Yesterday it went viral after Nollywood actress Genevieve Nnaji called out Cinema owners for refusing to show her movie 'Lion heart'....She claims there is some kind of Politics going on and I kind of disagreed with her and said she was the only one talking.....

I have since been made to Understand that Genevieve is one of the many movie producers this is happening to and if you speak out,you will be totally blacklisted the way talented movie producer Blessing Egbe has been blacklisted from any thing to do with cinema in Nigeria..(probably why her movies have not shown in the cinemas)

While some enjoy ten times a day,all week viewing of their movie at the cinema, some get their movies yanked off after a few days and fans who go to watch their movies are given other options....

If you speak out or call anyone out concerning this, then forget about taking your movies to the Cinema in Nigeria......Insiders allege that for calling these cinemas out,Genevieve might have shot herself with her own Dane gun in the foot.

''Stella if you go to the movies now, there is one particular Nigerian movie which was just released,it is showing seven times a day,all week and all other movies have been yanked off to give this one space to sell out....All other movies have been thrown out or had their showing times changed abruptly for no reason at all and when their fans arrive to watch these movies, they are shown something else.It is horrible and good that Genny cried out but she may just have made herself the sacrificial lamb in this matter''

Please if you know anything about what is gong on and those behind this, please go under anon and tell us......

  3. It doesnt just happen in naija o. Even in Hollywood, the big budget mainstream movies are always given priority. Small independent movies with very little marketing and egunje budgets are on their own.

See the way other countries are progressing but Naija's matter is always filled with bile, hatred and greed. Na wa!

    1. See you talking from both sides of your mouth. Yesterday you took sides with Stella saying that Genevieve should just settle them so her movies can be shown at the cenima's, now you're here talking about naija having issues. You're part of the problem we have in this country Cynthia. People who don't know what they want.

  8. That is why Nolly is a fragment and will never be like Hollywood if they continue like this.
In America it is about business, In Nigeria it is about acrimony and self defeatist unhealthy competition and jealousy.

  14. It simply does not make good economic sense for any cinema to carry this movie. It is available on Netflix for a fraction of a movie ticket cost if you factor 4 users on a subscription.. It simply does not make economic sense.
Pls let me know if you have seen any movie that is in the cinema also shown on Netflix at the same time.

    1. The only sensible comment I have read here. This woman made so much money from Netflix so why make so much noise about something you do not even know of its foundation UNLESS you did not make as much as you claim to have made from Netflix.

    2. The only sensible comment I have read here. This woman made so much money from Netflix so why make so much noise about something you do not even know of its foundation UNLESS you did not make as much as you claim to have made from Netflix. The lied you have sold to Nigeria has now become your undoing. Pay their percentage, you can afford it as you claim and stop looking for sympathy.

    3. It's simple logic , if a movie is on Netflix it's hard to find it on the big screen. Gene stop with the noise .,

      Delete
    4. Netflix is yet to show the movie.it hasnt been released and its also not against the law for movies shown on Netflix to be watched at cinemas. Case in point, wedding party movie.. She invested in the movie and she can make whatever money should plans to make from it. Its her choice. Its not a sensible comment, you both reek of envy!

    5. It's not yet available on Netflix jare.

    6. Netflix hasn't started showing the movie yet and not everyone has Netflix so why can't dey be given the opportunity to watch it i the cinemas if dey choose so

    7. I think the beef stems from the fact that she premiered this movie outside Nigeria.

Na you do yourself . Go back to Morocco and let them play your movies in their cinemas😂🤣😂.

    8. If it’s only on Netflix how else would her fans see the movie, the average Nigerian doesn’t even know what Netflix is, so what are you saying. Does it make any sense for other nations to see it without be her own people?

      Delete
    9. Enemies see them crawling out, econimicians! Beef kill all of una. Lionheart won’t show on Netflix till January 4th.
They are hyping chief daddy as number one film, when it’s basically the only film, they don’t want lionheart to show at the same time as Chief daddy cos most Nigerians will go and see lionheart and leave chief daddy...that is the simple economics oga

      Delete
    10. Anonymous 14:26 you're just one bitter jealous low class. She lied about the deal with Netflix? How come BBC and CNN talked about the deal?
You're bitter because non of your movie ever made it outside this shore. Local champion oshi!

    11. I wonder if some people finish their thought process while thinking. The average Nigerian doesn't have Netflix. Even if the have, which daku-daju network will they use to stream it? Also, some people would rather watch a particular movie at the cinemas rather than at home just for the 'feels' and the funny general comments people make while at the cinemas. The movie is a Nigerian movie, why should it not be available to the average Nigerian to watch? You people should be thinking before making comments abeg

    12. Genevieve come show your movie in the UK, we will support you.
Imagine all this noise for N1500 ticket prices hmmmm

  15. Below was taken from a NYtimes article on why Netflix has Allowed theatre first release for a very small number of movies.

Most theater chains, including AMC and Regal, insist on a 90-day period of exclusivity. They worry that moviegoers will be reluctant to buy tickets if they know they can catch the same film just a few weeks (or days) later in their living rooms, and for less money. Single tickets cost $15 or more in New York and Los Angeles. A basic Netflix subscription is $8 monthly...

  16. She didn't shot herself Stella as the movie is in cinemas already.

  17. Every thing in Nigeria is Mago Mago what is their in showing her Movie On cinema.abi she need to pay Homage Corruption is Their Daily Bread..

  18. Take the movies to Funke's onscreen, ebonylife, Netflix and all other websites then. I have been wanting to watch some movies for a long time but can't watch because producers won't explore other options but the cinema

    ReplyDelete
  19. Film house did this woth King of boys. I went there on three occasions to watch it and they cancelled the viewing time, until they stopped showing it...and to think a lot of pele were asking to watch it. I kept wondering why they refused to show it with the number of people asking for it. I'm tired of enemies of progress in Nigeria

  20. You can never compare Hollywood with Nollywood.America is not enmeshed in corruption like Nigeria. Talking about wack and ridiculous movies,i give it to No Abdul of Ebony Tv. Genny have invested so much in her movie so she is free to recoup her investment.

  21. Anonymous, na real chief papa. Thats my nickname for the movie.
If its not showing on Netflix yet, Why can’t it be on cinemas though?
The reviews are just beautiful. I am watching this movie, nothing anyone says.

  22. So I expect a cinema to screen it for how many seconds when it will start streaming on Netflix on Jan 4 and it already has a place holder there. I wish I can send attachments, if you have Netflix, pls search for ‘lion’; lion heart is the last result to come up. In case you don’t know, most cinemas insists on at least 90 days to recoup their investment in giving u a screen time. For cinemas, their time is literally money. I am sure Benny knows all these and is just generating controversy for herself jare. In show biz, no new is bad news - generate controversy and get your self back in the news and on people’s minds.

  24. I know film one gang will be all over this post, posting fake maths and diverting from real issue.
The truth is, you guys are afraid that showing lionheart and chief daddy at the same time will be dissaster cos everyone is waiting for lionheart, and nobody will see the two showing the same time and chose Chief daddy, so you refused to show it and instead hyping Chief daddy and number one to use psychology and force people to see another factory fitted production.
Please for all movie lovers, lionheart is showing on Silverbird cinemas, don’t go to filmone to look for lionheart

    1. So, filmone should park their movie aside and be showing someone else’s? Even airlines will tell you to put on your own oxygen mask before helping someone else. Even the help self no be cumpolsion except they are your dependent. We all need to stop crying wolf

  25. Genny didn't shoot herself in the leg o, she spoke up for her colleagues who can't speak up,

Blessing Egbe and her beautiful movies don't make it to the cinema have you asked why?

Genevieve had her fans requesting for that movie, if you noticed everything was done in a rush.
For that anonymous who said they were angry because she premiered it outside first.
They requested for it during that Morocco movie festival. 2ndly if she had not premiered it at that Toronto film festival, how would she have gotten all those juicy deals and audience she got?

Genevieve ordinarily won't even want to bother herself because I heard Netflix paid her so well for the movie and she got a deal with TDA what else doe she want.
The question is, how many Nigerians have access to Netflix?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Please, by all means support your girl Genny by going to watch the movie at the cinemas, but don’t politicize a simple business decision abeg. Business men are in it for the profit; not everything is about politics. Filmone didn’t come and count bridge in Lagos. As long as they are not anti-competition

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well Stella,I have followed this case since you posted it yesterday and these are my findings;

The cinemas want to be part of the film production. They don't want to settle just for their own token on ticket sales.

Being part of the production compromises the quality of films which the very talented directors/producers do not want.

Mo Abudu's films have so far enjoyed this cooperation with the cinemas, reasons her movies always have priority over others at the expense of quality.

To Buttress the above point, try a visit to the cinemas...it's all about Chief Daddy. I cannot comment on the quality as I am yet to see it but from every indication it can't be anything compared to King of Boys by Kemi Adetiba.

It is just unfortunate Genevieve has been caught up with this greed of the cinemas owners.

  28. She did what very very very few Nigerians can do, spoke the truth regardless of the consequences.
You think she didn't know the truth before she said what she said?

I don't watch Nigerian movies. I wonder what kind of death threat I would receive to make me do so.
Would rather fetch water into a drum with a teaspoon.
But for this, this uncommon boldness she has shown,

    I'm with her 1000 percent.

Children of mice will not know what courage is, even if it hits them in the face with a shovel.

  29. Let's put emotions and sentiments aside here and think business please. This is a lesson to all producers. Do your homework well. Study and understand your market. Each market is different even though its the same industry (Nollywood is not Hollywood).
I'm not disputing that Nigeria has issues o, but in any business, we must dot our Is and cross our Ts. Nigeria is a country of moving parts, there's no equal footing anywhere, but we still see successful people working the system.

Genny should go back to negotiate a deal for herself. The social media call-out is not necessary.
