  1. I don't even have words this time around.I am sure the occupants rather stay in these buildings for fear of no where to go.The Lagos state government better come down hard on these people and demolish these buildings.Very sure more than 70% of the buildings need to be broken down.

  5. That Lagos governor should demolish government house instead of demolishing people's houses without resettling them.

    1. thats no excuse oh..the houses were built with cheap material...In Germany we have house that are over 100 years old still standing better than houses in banana island

    2. Stella, those houses in Germany you speak of still get maintained even though it was built a while ago . Similar in Amsterdam etc

    3. That the houses are old is no excuse to be honest. In other countries, structures of over 120years are still standing gidigba and will not collapse in the next 50years
We need to look into how we build and maintain houses in Nigeria

    4. Stella every building has a shell life of 100 years. After that some get elevated to the status of heritsge buildings. They are maintained and monitored by the government. They aren't left for private owners to continue to milk. Many of these Lagos Island houses are overcrowded. Imagine the one with schools and all. They bear more load than was origuinally designed for. What do you expect?

    5. please lets get something right, alot of these buildings that are collapsing are not upto 10years. the very old(er) houses which were built by the brazilians, amaros, creols and portuguese are still standing. Infact, most of them are being converted into mini flats. And Yes, they are very solid so stella is right. I lived in Obalende and Onikan respectively for 10years and i saw the speed they used to build houses.By morning, the rooms have been occupied. leaving one to wonder if there was time traveling. Those house inside lagos island are not old, they are just unpainted or poorly painted and DIRTY. So disgustlingly DIRTY which makes them come off as old. When you come across the old ones, you will know by their architectural designs. Please don't argue what you do not know have witnessed.

  12. The building was one of those already marked for demolision. At noon today, 4 workers of the state govt started manual demolision on the building. It was while they were at it that the floor they were working on caved in. 4 people were rescued alive and are now in hospital. According to eye witness accounts, there may have been some scavengers at the ground level who may still be trapped.

    1. I dont understand... demolision while people where still inside the building...? Are you sure of this your comment..?
If so, those 4 workers might have just committed murder...

Which one is manual demolition again?

      Delete
    3. The building was unoccupied as at the time of demolition. Manual demolition means breaking the building by the use of sledge hammers, small electrical saws, etc instead of heavy machines because buildings in the area are built too close together and if heavy mechinary is used, it may affect other buildings. Those 4 men were hired to do the work.

    4. The scavengers went in there at their own risk to pick iron rods, roofing sheets and other building materials they can use or sell. No one truly know if they were really trapped. All na dem say.

    1. Stupid talk.

That is why the African man won't progress. Everything is spirits, sacrifice, mini God, God etc even what requires common sense. So you are telling us the building was erected with the right materials not substandard, with the right approval and plan and by a qualified architect yet the mini gods brought down the building for sacrifice??? Akika!!

  20. Those houses were mostly approved as 1 or 2 storey buildings. But greedy developers added several floors with corrupt govt officials turning blind eyes to such activities after collecting bribes. Watching the demolition, you can see the concrete and cement mix was composed of more sand than cement and granite, the size of iron rods were to small to carry the weight of an highrise, and a lot of them have been converted to uses that they were not originally built for. I do business around there a lot so I know the state and condition of such buildings. There is no hidden reason for the collapse other than man's greed over common sense. These ones that are being taken down and even the one that collapsed last week had been marked for demolition since 2017! Litigation were going on hence the govt could not take action before now. But their eyes don clear now

  21. They need to do a geological survey to rule out the possibility that the land is shifting or the island sinking. Can it all be bad construction? Perhaps there is something going on with the land.

  22. This trend has to be checked by some Works Committee from the State Government. Is there a building code at all that guides construction of residential buildings? :(
