I closed my eyes, bowed my head and prayed over the food. When I opened my eyes, I saw the displeasure on my friend's face. She was clearly angry.
When I inquired why she was upset, she flared up that why would I bless the food she gave me . "Are you suspecting me of poisoning the food? " She asked. "Do you not trust me enough to eat my food without blessing it?"
I was perplexed, where was this coming from? She clearly got it wrong as I did it out of habit and not out of suspicion.
She was a Christian and I didn't understand the reason she was opposed to what I did.
I've gotten so used to blessing my food that I can't remember the last time I ate without praying over it. Even in a public place like wedding, parties or in a restaurant, in order not to attract undue attention to myself by praying out loud, I'll either whisper a prayer or do so silently.
I still don't know if I was at fault or she overreacted.

ReplyDeleteBut in cases like the above-mentioned, I do not bow my head nor close my eyes. My lips do not even move. I say a prayer quietly before eating, all they don't even realize it.
I even pray before eating the food I cook for myself by myself, talk more of outside food.

ReplyDeleteYou did nothing wrong dear. As a Catholic, we were taught prayers before and after meal which I still pray till date. But what I do frown at some persons is the way they pray. Some will start binding and casting before they eat a meal, making it look suspicious as if the presenter put something in it. Some will even speak in tongues just for a meal lol....

Sometimes when I say “thank you ma/sir” after eating, the way some people look at me makes me wonder if I did something wrong.
I was raised that way and I can’t change it.

Sorry but anyone who serves you food and says/does something to prove they didn't poison the food (when you haven't mentioned anything like that) has done something you don't know. If you eat in someone's house, that means there is a level of trust there. Nobody goes around expecting to be poisoned so if someone that gave you anything to eat is mentioning it, ask yourself why her mind went there. It's her guilty conscience.

Blessing of food and drink is a value worth inculcating, I learnt from my parents and my kids have been taught so.
aside from praying over a meal because of any negativity, it's also a means of thanking God for the provision of the food. some people do not have to eat while some have but cannot eat..so it's normal to thank God

It was my first time eating there and she did something I thought was strange at the time but cos she's older, I didn't question it. She served me poundo and soup, she took some of it in my front, dipped into the soup and ate before I started eating. I thought she was trying to assure me that it wasn't poisoned but I thought why will my mind even go there? I no know say na another thing; by the next time we saw, she had proclaimed me her enemy. That they summoned and my spirit refused to answer.

ReplyDeleteDee see let me tell you, I'm from a strong christian home that we pray before eating, i stay with my sis and mum visited on Wednesday. i made food for her in the kitchen, we were both together. when she wanted to eat the food, she prayed over it. instantly i felt bad, aww she not trusting me? then it strike me that it a normal norm in the family. if you said my friend told me, i would have said maybe i know you and i told you the gist.

Presently visiting my mom, and I gave her snacks that I brought for her, she blessed it before biting into it, and I did so when I eventually ate mine!

Honestly, this is just the result of living in a superstitious society where ppl are dashing juju here and there. It is better to say grace together when everyone is seated with their food, one person says grace for all the food. But living in a highly superstitious society like Nigeria one has to be conscious how they do things. Next time take her hands and pray a prayer of thank you for all she has done and the work she put into the food she cooked for you, that is a general blessing that covers her and the food together and not just the food alone.

DeleteI wasn't in the habit of blessing my food (still struggling with it) until I read on this blog where a BV advised someone who said she always ate in her dreams and had done series of fasting,deliverances,prayers etc to no avail for it to stop, to always sanctify anything that goes into her mouth in the physical. She said once it becomes a habit, she will start practicing it in her dreams and such dreams would stop. We all know the power in the blood of Jesus of course. Fortunately for me, I had the same issue so in addition to my prayers etc, I started sanctifying everything to eat or drink with the blood of Jesus( though I forget at times) and I have noticed a great change. The powers of darkness apparently are getting tired of wasting their efforts and resources.

ReplyDeleteShe is silly. Always bless your food...I had similiar experience years back when a girl did the same. She refuse to bless the food and made me not bless the food. I regretted becos i started having spiritual attack and vomiting after eating. It was divine help and prayer that save me. Pals always pray and never let anyones angry face or threat scare or silence you from doing the right thing. God First and evryone else last.
