Omugwo Chronicles 59...

The Omugwo Chronicles is back........................

When I became pregnant I decided that I was going to go back to my parents' in Delta state so that I can take advantage of the free medical care for pregnant women and children. I travelled back when i was five months pregnant, so my omugwo with my mum kinda stated even before I put to bed.

While I was pregnant, my mum was helping me wash my clothes, sweeping my room and cooking ( that woman forced unripened plantain down my throat, she said it's for my good and for the good of the babies. Though I hated it, she gave it to me every morning, lol)

She was with me in the hospital, sleeping on a chair for the three days I was there.

My Mum really came through those months before I gave birth, it was during the omugwo proper that things became sketchy. I gave birth to a boy and girl, on the eight day we went to circumcise the boy, we were told how to care for the wound so that it does not get infected.

We were told not to bath the baby that night. The next morning when it was time to bath the children, imagine my surprise when my mum could not or refused to wash and press the wound, she said it was "doing her somehow", in hindsight I guess can understand why she was feeling that way, my boy cried seriously the few time she dabbed at the wound, but I am a first time mum, I was having horrible imagination of erectile dysfunction and all that, na my son future generation we dey talk about oooo.

I knew something had to be done, if I leave this for my mum, the wound might just get infected, also the gel for the umbilical cord had to be applied only once a day and instead of applying it at the root of the cord, she was applying it on the cord itself ( I found out that the umbilical cord is very sensitive, a lot can go wrong if care is not taken)

When the babies were born they where slightly jaundiced, so I was introduced to a lady that came to bath them with some herbs ( mint leave, lemon grass, scent leaves among others, I will not recommend this form of treatment for a baby with severe jaundice, the baby should be put under light first to reduce the level first before other means can be used). The lady baths them in the evening while my mum does in the morning, that evening, the lady came, the way she cleaned the wound undermining the cries gladdened my heart, so after thinking about it, I came up with a white lie, I told my mum that we where told in the hospital to bath the babies once a day, i told her we have to leave the bathing for the lady as she is administering treatments. She bathed them for a month and by then the wound had healed and his umbilical cord had fallen off. My daughter's own refused to fall off oooo and my mum had to take over, my girl ended up with a big navel, lol.

After I gave birth my mum massaged my tummy exactly 3 times and she told me to start doing it myself, I tried to but I knew something had to be done when I was allowed to withdraw at the ATM because they thought I was pregnant three weeks after I had delivered. Aju mbaise to the rescue ( it works , I didn't even bleed after I gave birth, but the aju mbaise washed out the bad blood and my stomach is almost back to normal).

The first time my mum left me with the twins was when they were two weeks old. She left for her shop around 9am and I didn't see her again till 6pm. I had never been so harried in my life, it got to a stage I was crying. My mum came back and had some explanation about taking stock, me I wasn't even listening, I was sooooo pissed ehhhh. It was that day I decided that I am on my own, my mum can help anyway she can but I have to depend on myself alone, and as soon as I made that decision I became calmer and when she starting going to her shop barely three weeks into the omugwo, I was OK with it.

I am still in Delta State so that the children could take their shots till three months ( we will continue with rest when we get back to my base), my omugwo experience taught me that when it comes down to it you can only depend on yourself, when I get back I will be able to adjust easily because I already do everything on my own, right now I am teaching the twins how to sleep on their own.

My mum might have her issues ( don't we all?), but she is the real MVP when it comes to waking up with me at night to take care of the twins, sometimes when only one is up, she tells me to go back to sleep, while she stays awake with the baby

Forgive any typos and hope I didn't bore you guys.

*Congrats oooooh,I adore twins and multiple babies but from afar....

But once d baby is around 3mnths O can take over from there. After the omugwo she was begging me to stay longer than necessary. ( I spoilt her so much)

  9. You people no dey fear oo.
You drank any mbaise while breastfeeding???
That means your kids drank it with you.
Later you'll open mouth and bath people that opt for surgeries.
Meanwhile your own vanity is on another level. To the detriment of your kids

    1. If you drank pepper soup, I mean the type prepared with uda, when you gave birth then there is nothing wrong with drinking Aju mbaise. Our mothers from generations pass have been taking this to remove bad blood after birth, and we turned out fine. Google is your friend, go and search how breast milk is formed, it does not mean that if you eat yam, your baby sucks yam directly from your breast or sucks Aju mbaise if you drink Aju mbaise. Gwad!!!!

  10. Mean while care of umbilical cord is not the cause of big navel.
Big navel means the baby has umbilical hernia which she was born with.
It has nothing to do with cord care.
Please let's be informed and guided.

    1. Dear, nobody is born with umbilical hernia. As an unborn baby develops during pregnancy, there is a small opening in the abdominal muscles. After birth, this opening closes. But sometimes, these muscles don’t fully close. A small opening is left. A loop of intestine can then move into the opening between the belly muscles. This causes an umbilical hernia. So it's not something the child was born with, other factors made it occur, so cord care can be a contributing factor.

    3. Thank you o. Care of the umbilical cord has got absolutely NOTHING to do with an umbilical hernia. And yes, umbilical hernias are congenital, meaning babies are born with them. Every baby with an umbilical hernia was born with it. That you did not recognize it when the cord was still attached does not mean it was not there.

So much ignorance on care of babies in this write up and in the comments. Not the posters fault o. It’s our healthcare and educational system failing us all.

  12. Poster sorry you are so entitled. I had my twins exactly 3 weeks ago via C section. From the first day I gave birth my mum left I and the babies at the hospital with their nanny for work after bathing us and making sure I have eaten. When we went home after one week their nanny had an urgent engagement and had to travel for 1 week. My mum still went to work although she goes very late. I stayed alone with the twins for a minimum of 6 hours for 1 week. I never complained instead I was grateful. I can't ask her to resign her job because of omugwo. it was only last week she was able to get leave from work. The other day she was scolding me that I don't sit to watch her while bathing the babies and I told her I have watched her do it 3 times and I can do it. I narrated it to her and told her the next day I will bath them and they were just 2 weeks old but she did not agree the next day.
Learn to be independent and grateful . Nobody owes you anything. If she was not available you will figure it out.
Congratulations on the birth of your twins.
