William Onyeabor, the father of Afro funk and then King Sunny Ade..Not many people know that KSA turned down the offer to "crossover" in the seventies. He went to Hollywood, did a cameo and then a soundtrack to a Hollywood movie, but he didn't want to becoming "An American".
Back to this list, the closest is Femi Kuti ( by association to Fela) or Tuface Idibia ( when African Queen was used as part of the soundtrack to Phatgirls movie), but we still don't have an Alister, as big as Fela was, or even Black Coffee who has a residency in Las Vegas.
In recent times, I would say Dbanj and Wizkid at least in the UK, which I believe was the place Afro garnered more grounds after it took over the club scenes by surprise, fazing out the grime, skank, dot step and bashment. Big up Abracadbra and Bugzy Malone who are still trying to keep the grime alive, but their rhythms are not as popular as the wavey songs that get played by djs. Since the world boss got incarcerated, the rhythms from the Carribean have being trying to survive. Mainstream Arts in the UK are all trying to get that Afro lingo, because its wavey on a max.
