Weekend Arena - Over 25% Of Nigerians Have Mental Issues;Look Well Before You Fall In Love

The media space has been inundated with some of the ugliest stories, revolving around violence against the female gender in the past couple of weeks. Some of these stories are so ugly that they make the stomach walls convulse in bewilderment.

They read like scenes in a classic action movie directed by a John Woo and remind one of murder schemes designed by a Mario Puzo. Some are so strange and unbelievable, that the typical Nigerian Christian would be quick to remind one of the Last Days, as predicted in the Bible.

From Edo, to Oyo and Lekki in Lagos, it has been tales of extreme violence, mostly directed at the girl child. While Nigerians were mourning the death, inside a church, of Uwaila Omozuwa, a microbiology undergraduate at the University of Benin, after she was reportedly sexually violated, similar incidents happened in Oyo state, leading to the deaths of two young ladies, who were equally violated sexually.

But the story of the couple (Chris Ndukwe and Olamide Alli) at an estate in Lekki, Lagos, perhaps, took it to a higher pedestal, following the gory narratives that are emanating from the murder. Although, the story has had several dilutions, typical of passive accounts when the main characters are not alive to offer explanations, the take away remains that the 39 year old man tied his spouse’s legs and hands with tapes, pulled out her braids with pliers, stabbed her about eleven times, including on her eyes before consuming a poisonous substance, which killed him. The deaths according to available reports have instantly made their two kids orphans.

So many reasons have been attributed to the ugly incident, but the truth remains that no offence, contrived or real, save from an attempt at life, is enough to be meted with such brutality, especially to a woman one has shared so much with in the past! To imagine someone driving a kitchen knife into a spouse eleven times, when a whole lot of us find it grim to slaughter a harmless fowl, bred by an unknown farmer and bought with our hard-earned money, leaves one with one conclusion: so many people are mentally deranged.

One can only appreciate the prevalence of mental illness in Nigeria, by studying a 2016 research written in a journal, ‘Annals of Nigerian Medicine’ by Dauda Suleiman of the Department of Pathology, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, which posited that mental illness in the country runs in 20% to 30% of the population! The enormity of this can be deduced when one computes this against a total population of 200 million people.

That is over 50 million! Some are wont to limit their imagination of mental illness to only those who are dirty and naked, trekking from one market to another bus stop. Beyond the markets or bus stops or even the psychiatric homes, there are many responsible-looking husbands, boyfriends, bosses in the offices, lecturers, pastors and also politicians (of both sexes, I must stress) who have such illnesses and have the propensity to unleash terror, may be not in the gruesome manner as exhibited by Chris Ndukwe.

The similar accounts of a father of 43, defiling his 5 year old daughter in Anambra or a man of 20 raping a 70 year old woman in Osun, all point to one trait-mental imbalance, to put it mildly. This could be responsible for that boss in the office, who dispenses sadistic approach to everything he does. Once, a certain boss in a particular company in Lagos had one of his hardworking staffers confined in the office’s toilet for hours. The story is simple: the lock on the toilet was malfunctioning and suddenly refused to open when the staffer finished using the facility. All entreaties to break the door, so this staffer could come out, were met with stiff opposition by the boss. According to him, breaking the door would be noisy.

He insisted everyone must wait for the company’s carpenter, who was away on another assignment in another end of the town returns to do it expertly and noiselessly. That kept the guy inside the toilet for almost 5 hours! How would someone define this?

If not for mental illness, why would a politician steal public funds in a manner that depicts foolishness? Some politicians in Nigeria own homes they have not stepped foot on or made any money from in ten years, yet they are busy diverting funds for simple road repairs to their personal accounts, because they have the opportunity. When a hunter has killed an elephant as a game, and still turns to run after a cricket, then the person needs to be examined.

It is high time Nigeria started paying attention to the mental wellbeing of her citizens. While urging couples to undergo a genotype compatibility test before marriage, similar efforts should also be directed towards mental health. As he or she smiles to you, as in wooing you, with his genotype and HIV status, kindly ask for the accompanying mental analysis certificate.

When he hits you in the morning and comes in the evening to apologise that he did not know what came over him, believe him, but act accordingly. He actually does not know! For our government, isolation centres should equally be directed to people who fail mental fitness tests, not only COVID-19 tests.

  2. Whereas the grammar and construction of this article is nice...
The issue of "wooing a potential spouse with mental analysis certificate" does not seem to be a
pragmatic approach to a societal malady; the issue of women abuse.
How about studying the person's characters and not concentrating on sex and monetary gains? Aren't those the things that blind a lot of females from seeing the red flags and outright conflagrations? 🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️

    1. I can tell you that everything is not about sex.. I know of a woman in her 50s now even married to a pastor, married a virgin and her life is a living hell. The man is so domineering and entitled and she doesn't have a life. For her children to even say they can never marry a man like their dad speaks a lot...I heard them say it.. they had a godly courtship. Most men are good at hiding their character during courtship.
This is just one of the many few

You just told the story of "a woman and a pastor"
      Didn't you?
How about so many women; thousands, millions...don't you read this blog or are you new?
How about social media? The two things a lot of women's lives revolve around are fornication/money/abroad?
      Yes, three.
That is the truth like the clear blue sky. 🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️

  4. There are a lot of personality disorders that people need to read up on. So when the slightest sign surfaces they excuse themselves from the person and the situation. These kinds of abusive men, please when you leave make sure you aren't within their reachable distance. Most trail their victims. Some of these men who have the "if I can't have her, no other person will" mentality, aren't an exception. A friend was lucky to escape the clutches of one but he came back for her when she got married 10 years ago. All through the time she was single, we thought he had moved on because he didn't make a move, so everyone was relieved. Only for him to surface the moment he heard she was married, he tracked her down. He slit her throat with a penknife and left her for dead. She was in a coma for a while. We didn't even have the foggiest idea he was the one. Luckily she came back to life and mentioned him. He was still living in his house living his normal life then like nothing happened thinking he had succeeded in killing my friend. He didn't a scone till the police took him. After she was healed she instantly relocated with her husband.

What is the meaning of this, Biko?

How can a human being with blood in his body act like this???

I praise God who revived the lady.

  5. It is crazy what is happening these days. Worse is that the signs are glaring in most cases but women especially choose to ignore because "I must marry". Fathers abusing their children 🤦🏾‍♀️ it is really crazy. I don't know what else to say.

  6. Hm what u are saying is 100% true. believe u me those percentages must have raised up by now. With the quest for wealth and poverty, more people will be mental now. I had a boyfriend who used to hit me in the morning and apologize in the evening( like u say) By the 3rd time he hit me I packed my load and left. No be me go carry mad man put for my head. Heard he beat his wife so bad now that he is married that she ran away. I thank God I dodged a bullet.

  7. Well written Mr Ngozi👏👏👏
Nigeria should begin to pay attention to mental health as a whole..my only concern is primary issues such as power, healthcare, education, security haven't recieved proper attention not to talk of going as far as mental health.
    It is well with Nigeria.

  9. 'so many people are mentally deranged'. This right here is so true! Unfortunately many will not acknowledge they have a problem, nor will they seek help. Truly fam, we ought to look carefully before jumping into relationships. Great write up Ngozi

  10. I agree with you Mr Ngozi...
I think couples especially the Men should undergo Mental Evaluation Test by a certified Practitioner before getting married . I think the African Entitlement Mentality has really gotten into the head of some men (some are aware while some are not) hence making them misbehave.

      That channel exhausts me.

Initially, I thought I would like to watch and learn how to avoid exposing oneself to dangers.

My goodness I switched to Emmanuel TV and a few others before my second sub expired.

I could not imagine the several horrific conditions those victims were subjected to before they were killed.

I wasn't scared but I was beginning to feel sick.

  14. Alot of mental cases abounds in Nigeria but due to the primary challenges we are facing as a nation,it's not been addressed.we can only pray not to be in contact with such people as they can 'do and undo'

  16. I have personally dated a man im suspecting of having mental illness. I never got close enough for him to harm me anyway. Once i start noticing their erratic behaviour, before you even slap me i have said good bye. Once i notice you have temper problem and you verbally and psycollogically abuse. Trying to break me and let me have low self esteem. Luckily i think highly of myself if not.
I broke up with him over the phone and he was threatening suicide. I blocked him all round and thankfully where i stay u cant enter the estate except i give ur name and authorise your entry.

  17. My mother said in the olden days before parents can consent to their children's wedding, it was customary to investigate the other family. Mental health was one of the issues that would be investigated. She is usually sad that we have lost that culture. It is true that mental health issues are very prevalent. We owe it to ourselves to educate ourselves on the signals. Infact a careful study of the pattern of some comments on this blog will reveal that that mental health issue(s) may be at play.

    1. Exactly

Most people have more undiagnosed mental ailment or the other especially in a society where there is little or no exposure and education about the mental health

      Delete
  18. Mental issues are real, but we must be very careful not to mistake cultural systems that allow and encourage violence against women and then cry mental issues when it happens. Many of these men hurt women because they can. But when we explain it as mental issues, we leave the blame on that one man and forget that men use violence because our society says it's okay. Why isn't anyone saying that staying with a violent man can cause mental issues? When women kill their partners, you don't read comments that say she had mental issues. Rather we say she is wicked. Let's not just teach people the signs to look for or getting certificates. Let's start destroying the very traditions and beliefs that blame women when they are victims and excuse men who beat or kill women. After all, not all character flaws are psychological or show when expected.

      You’re absolutely right.

Also, doesn’t take away from the fact that many in Nigeria have mental illness/disorders that has nothing to do with culture.

    2. 3Amigos, I agree with you and was not disputing that. I just wanted to point out that it is very easy to jump on the mental illness wagon in this context and unfortunately, it doesn't apply to most cases I have studied. Mental illness is not cultural, but how we perceive/define and handle it is.

  22. Everything is spiritual. Let God who instituted relationship and marriage guide not emotions, personal needs and societal demands. It's wisdom to restrain from premarital sex or possibly delay it as much as you can until you get to know the other person well because sex clouds judgement especially good sex. Dating/courtship period isn't the time to explore each others body but a time to focus on the long term goal and ask many pertinent/ deep questions. Many God help us all, amen.

  23. I almost married a mad professor! On one visit I noticed he was a hoarder! Everything from empty cereal boxes to dirty take away packs littered his house and car! His house was filled with roaches and he had a vile temper! His wife ran away, he was sacked from work, totally obsessed with me, he flew into rages at the drop of a hat! I could go on and on but long story short, keep your eyes wide opened!
