NBA Chairman Olumide Akpata Calls For Unity As Northern Lawyers Break Off Over Gov El Rufai Disinvitation

Olumide Akpata,the new President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA),  has condemned the move by a section of Northern lawyers to form a break-away faction over the Governor El Ruhai Disinvitation issue...

He described the secession moves within the association as unfortunate and has called on the aggrieved members to reconsider the decision;
 Akpata made this call in his inaugural speech on Friday, August 28, 2020.

He said, “I am not unaware of very recent events and agitations that have tended to divide our Bar along regional and religious lines. This is rather unfortunate for an egalitarian Association like ours.

“The Bar that I want to lead, henceforth, is one that is united on all fronts and that recognises that our diversity is, perhaps, our greatest strength. I plead with all Nigerian lawyers to bear this philosophy of unity in mind; as we commence a new journey together today.”

Lawyers of Northern extraction on Thursday, August 27th pulled out of the NBA; and formed another association with the aim of protecting their interests as encapsulated under Section 40 of the Constitution.

    1. This is an example of why it will be extremely difficult for this country not to eventually split up. Already we think of ourselves in factions and find it difficult to agree or compromise even on the simple issues. We are watching........

  2. Let them go...their fellow northerner who is presently the short devil RG of CAC used his wife to create a company to extort lawyers and no one said a word. You now want to bring another short devil who obviously don't care why his people are being killed in his state to come and do what at the conference? Which wisdom is he bringing to the table?

    Even you Olumide ...you're silence about alot of things are glaring but you speak up about this.

  6. It is quite unfortunate.
    Well they are at liberty to form their own brand of Bar Association.

    Though I know that this new NBA President would not be pleased that the Bar Association just started off with lots of contradictions and controversies, no thanks to the Ex President!

    I sincerely hope that Mr Akpata's tenure be impactful.
    Let the Bar be Vocal and not hidding as if they are afraid of their shadows.
    There's past Two years, was just not good!
    With the many 'dramas' that played out last year, the Leadership of the past NBA was kinda onlookers, no strong message from the Body!

    Mr Akpata, try and do better, we are rooting for you and your executives.
