EkweremaduGATE- EX DSP, Wife And Doctor Jailed In The UK For Organ Trafficking

A former deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice, and their ‘middleman’ doctor, Obinna Obeta, have been jailed for organ trafficking by the Central Criminal Court in Old Bailey, U.K.

The couple and 25-year-old daughter Sonia were accused of taking a 21-year-old street trader from Lagos to the U.K. with the intent to harv£st his kidney.

At a sentencing hearing on Friday, May 5, 2023 Ekweremadu was jailed for nine years and eight months, his wife Beatrice was sentenced to four years and six months imprisonment while Obeta received a 10-year prison term.

The judge, Justice Johnson, told the defendants: “In each of your cases the offence you committed is so serious that neither a fine nor a community sentence can be justified.”

    We need equality..

Men and women have different jail time for the same offence.. this is so unfair to our women, they want to be treated equally in all things

Why don't you use Google to research on the average custodial sentence length for male and female offenders ..

You people won't know something and are too lazy for common Google search but you like to argue

the nonsense that they do in a lawless country like Nigeria in other part of the world. By the way, why is the life of their spoilt, privileged daughter better than the boy who they are taking his organ? The worst part is some people supporting and rooting for people that committed a crime? And these are the people that talks about corruption and how screwed up the system is in the country

  19. not dealing with David directly, he never knew that Obeta pocketed most of the money.

However, the law viewed Ekweremadu’s decision not to deal directly with David as a typical behavior of a big man who knew that he is getting involved in a crime. He would usually try to create some distance between him and the crime, yet he will be funding the crime from afar.

Otherwise, how come you never wanted to meet the boy that is giving his kidney to your daughter and whom you called cousin to your daughter (which actually makes him your nephew)? Rather than see the non-direct dealing as evidence of his innocence, it was seen as deliberate or willful ignorance aimed at evading legal responsibility.

One of the key factors that worked against Ekweremadu was that he lied. On three official documents he signed, he stated that David was Sonia’s cousin. But in all the WhatsApp chats he had with the doctor and his own brother over the matter, he referred to David as “that guy”. Hence the question: “You knew he was not Sonia’s cousin. While you signed that he was her cousin, when you wanted to say the truth, you referred to him as “that guy”, meaning you didn’t know him or even remember his name”. Ekweremadu admitted in court that he lied and apologized.

NOTE: I decided to provide these details because I have read somewhere it was being said that David misled Ekweremadu and took advantage of him. No, David is a real victim. He did not manipulate them. He was manipulated by Dr. Obinna Obeta, who was working for the Ekweremadu.

  21. SOME LITTLE DETAILS YOU DID NOT KNOW ABOUT IN THE EKWEREMADU CASE.

David Ukpo Nwamini is the 21-year-old Lagos street hawker who was to give his kidney to Ekweremadu’s daughter IN London. When he was interviewed at the hospital in London, they asked him if he knew he was to donate his kidney to Sonia Ekweremadu.

He first told them that he had no money to donate. They explained to him that it was his kidney that he was to donate. He asked them what was kidney.

Initially, the doctors thought it was a question of language, since David’s English was not good enough. However, they eventually understood that David did not know which human organ was called kidney.

In other words, he did not know what organ he was to give Sonia. That led the doctors to conclude that the procedure was not well-explained to David and that is the number one requirement by law.

According to the law, you must explain to the organ donor the procedure and all the health risks associated with the procedure. It is only then that the donor is taken to have informedly consented.
When the doctors found that David did not understand what he was about to get involved in, they declared him a mismatch.

The term “mismatch” is a technical generic language to indicate that the proposed organ harvesting has not met all the requirements.

Many in Nigeria have misunderstood the term “mismatch” in this case to meant that David’s kidney was not suitable for Sonia.

No! There was nothing wrong with David’s Kidney.

To donate an organ, the facts must match both the law and the science governing the procedure. While the kidney matched the scientific requirement, the facts did not match the legal requirement.

So, it was declared a mismatch. To help you understand it better, the term “mismatch” means there is a discrepancy.

The doctors who interviewed David did not and could not have determined that a crime was committed. The doctors did not have sufficient information to reach such conclusion then.

They felt uncomfortable with the discrepancies in the information they had about the donor and his decisions and whether he had made up his mind.

For instance, the doctors did not get involved in how David was brought to them or whether he was paid. It was not their duty to deal with that. It was actually when Ekweremadu and Dr. Obinna attempted to return David to Nigeria that the problem started.

David expected that he would be given a job in London as he was told before he left Nigeria. They did not give him job and they did not send him to school. Instead of all he was promised, he was asked to prepare to return to Nigeria and David ran away from the house where he was kept.

As hunger wired him, he reported himself to the police. To win the immediate protection of the police, he lied about his age by telling them he was 15.

It was when he was interviewed by the police that the information came out which established that a crime was committed. For instance, it was at the police station that they asked him if he was paid money and he said yes he was paid N270,000. When the police checked the WhatsApp chats between Ekweremadu and Dr. Obeta they realized that Ekweremadu actually paid 4.5 million for Obeta to pay to David. But Obeta only paid David N270,000 and pocketed the rest.

    ReplyDelete

  22. In fact, Ekweremadu tried to keep himself away from certain details of the deal. That was why Ekweremadu never discussed money with David. In fact, he did not deal directly with David. That was what made it possible for Obeta to cheat him. Ekweremadu believed that the 4.5 million went to David. But since he was not dealing with David directly, he never knew that Obeta pocketed most of the money.

1. Anon 21:40, your "little details" proves further that justice was not served in this case. That the British Judiciary was not unbiased in handling the case, that the intricacies of the case were not explored and this judgement needs to be appealed and struck out due to the earlier stated inadequacies.

      1. Your assertion that David was not aware that he was in the UK for kidney donation is most likely false.
---His visa was a medical visa, the british embassy in Nigeria was written concerning the transplant and kidney donation. Medical match tests were carried out on him in Nigeria to ensure he was a medical match. At that time the tests were carried out in Nigeria what was he thinking? The hospitals in Nigeria should send the papers he signed consenting to the tests.

---The fact that he gave an initial INFORMED CONSENT does not mean he has to go through with the case, he is free to change his mind at any time according to medical and legal laws surrounding transplants.

---The donor changing his mind does not give the law the right to criminalize the would be recipient or her representatives.

---If he was not informed, do you think Dr. Obeta would have left him on his own to talk to the transplant doctors?

      2. Your assertion that David was not willfully deceitful when changing his mind about proceeding with the case is most likely false.

--Per your write up, the British doctors deduced on their own that he did not understand the intended procedure and was most likely not properly informed.
*** The most likely case scenario, he gave his informed consent in Nigeria to use the Ekweremadus as a conduit to get to the UK, which was a reach to him at the time.
On getting to the UK, a different plan was needed to 'stay'. Hence his deceit to the transplant doctors in the UK feigning misunderstanding of the intended procedure.
The UK doctors declared him an administrative 'mismatch'. The next thing was to go back home to Nigeria per the laws guiding his visa. The Ekweremadus made this known to him (according to your write up), he fled and was on the streets for 2 days before speaking with the police.
**Do you not think that an honest person who was unaware of his kidney about to be removed would consider himself lucky and eager to just go back home?
No, he fled when he was told he would go back to Nigeria, because his plan was to get to the UK and stay there. The agony of the poor daughter with ESRD and the pain of her family was inconsequential to him. Eat the rich.

As for Dr. Obeta giving David stipend from the administrative fees given to him by the Ekweremadus, the doctor may have done that because he knew that present UK laws did not support the donor payment, but allowed stipends for transportation and minor costs.
N270,000 equivalent of less than a thousand pounds can hardly be regarded as payment.

Conclusion: This judgement should be vacated and the Ekweremadus should be allowed to attend to their daughters ailment. David should be granted his (probably lifelong) wish to stay in the UK. The Nigerian and other African governments should race to develop their land, equip hospitals and build infrastructures, ensure all citizens are adequately cared for so that young men like David stop seeing other countries (who have their own problems) as a haven or heaven, such that they are willing to sacrifice a whole family to get their desire to stay in these countries.

  26. This Dr. Obeta is a criminal and I'm happy at his jail sentence. He is obviously running an Organ trade business in U.k,of all places. This is exactly how he also got his own kidney transplant some years ago. Lied that his donor was his cousin whereas they were not related at all and the young man was actually paid to donate his kidney to Obeta. That is exactly what he wanted to do for the Ekweremadu's but it unfortunately backfired. I hope they open that case against him too and prosecute him. He is definitely going to lose his medical license. As for the Ekweremadu's,justice has been served. You do the crime, you do the time. I pray Sonia gets a donor legally and learns from this experience to become a better person in life.
