From the fertilization stage up to foetus and then a baby. God in deed, is wonderful. The joy of it can't be overemphasized in a family and in a situation where couples are trying to conceive, it leaves some disappointment to their expectation most especially when they're been satisfied medically fit to have one.
Back then in one of my former residence, there was this couple who parked in when a tenant had just parked out. After some few months, we saw the woman becoming heavy with a child. There's a maternity home in my compound run by a midwife over the years.
Almost everyday, we get to hear the cries of new born. Periodically, pregnant women do come for checkup to ascertain the position of their baby in the womb and other necessary information.
One day I overheard a neighbor gossiping saying, according to the midwife what the pregnant neighbor who parked in new in the compound had in her isn't a foetus. She told her during checkup that she can't feel anything like a baby on her but the woman insisted and shouted, ''God forbid. I will carry my baby to full term.''
In two different check up, it was the same experience and the nurse recommended her to a hospital. She stopped going to the maternity for a routine checkup and resorted to prayer houses. We the good neighbors were expecting the good news of her putting to birth anytime soon but didn't get to see that happened. From her calculation to the nurse, she was eight month gone and was expecting to birth on the next month.

Now, I want to ask. Is it that a pregnant woman can't feel it when she's at that stage or aren't there signs of pregnancy on the body?
The ninth month came and no sign of labour. Up till the twelfth month. Everyone became concerned and worried. Prayers were held midnight at her home from different ministries and nothing changed. Is it that the woman was lying to herself on the true situation of things or was she believing in some sort of an invincible miracle?

On the fifteen months, with four months of their rent expiration, they parked out of the compound. Obviously, she couldn't withstand why her own 'pregnancy' is different from other women's own.
One day, we got to hear from the nurse that the woman was scammed by some traditional medicine practitioners who gave her concoctions that inflated her stomach. They told her the mixtures will got her pregnant and when she began seeing the rise, they told her she's pregnant. She was instructed never to go to the hospital. I heard they spent over half a million for that but it was all a scam.
One question I would have loved to ask that woman if I was the nurse was, if she was menstruating all the while the stomach was developing. How will that stomach eventually go back to normal was what I kept asking myself. There's no length scammers and criminals won't get to in defrauding their victims. How did they even convinced this woman and she believed even without pregnancy symptoms that she was carrying a baby.
Strange realities.
That pregnancy scam is very common in the south west region.. There Target are mostly desperate women seeking for the fruit of the womb... They ll instruct them not to go for pregnancy scan or register the fake pregnancy in another hospital.. Unknown to this women, they have a baby factory and when it is time for them to give birth, they give them another woman's child
ReplyDeleteI have heard stories about it, it is still happening up to date
East is their headquarters.
DeleteWhen they complete payment, the midwife will now ask them to come for delivery. They will now inject and fake labor will start so if anyone is with the woman you'd believe she's truly in labor.
The movie, Broken Hallelujah comes to mind. That scene where Bimbo's mother-in-law got her concoction from the village, that messed with her hormones and gave her automatic pregnancy symptoms . Even the test strip was fooled too, its result came out positive.
DeleteHer visitation to the hospital revealed the truth alas.
Things are happening.
Poshscent, did you mean to say South-South (PH, specifically) or you no know geography? All the stories of that scam were from PH - around Elelenwo - Eleme axis
Delete@Poshscent, lol at your statement that the scam is common in South West, hsve you been to PortHarcourt lately? That city is the HQs of pregnancy scam, and many people are foolishly falling for it with their hard earned money.
DeleteNice write-up Ezege.
ReplyDeleteSame thing happened to a woman I know. She was ttcing for years then suddenly we saw a protruding stomach. Everyone was so happy for her and her husband.
Nine months passed and she was still carrying her supposed pregnancy. In fact it was more than a year and I asked her cousin who I was closed to what was happening with her sister's pregnancy and she told me it was a cryptic pregnancy and that the sister is waiting for the money the midwife charged them to complete them she will go and birth her baby. I asked so labour starts when money completes and she was angry.
The thing is these people are desperate and they become gullible or should I say they fake ignorant just because they desperately want babies.
About stomach going back to normal, what they do is they give them injections and after some weeks their stomach becomes flat.
My God answer every woman ttcing.
But if truly the pregnancy was there, it's unwise to advice a pregnant woman not to visit the hospital. Antenatal is very vital when pregnant.
ReplyDeleteThe women are usually willing participants. It's a well organized system: the women register with these people, are given the medications, repeatedly, which mimic pregnancy symptoms. Within that timeline, arrangements are made with a baby factory for a baby that'll be born within that timeline. The woman avoids hospitals/professionals at all costs within this period. At the set time , she goes feigning labour, baby is delivered and presented as the newly delivered baby and no one's the wiser after all, what you don't know...
ReplyDeleteMost cases, the husband and other family members may not be in on it.
I think it that cryptic pregnancy scam, there was a story on arise TV about it, So someone went undercover and the woman that owns the fake clinic, was charging huge amount of money to help these probably unsuspecting women with fake pregnancy, she was even giving medications to make the tummy big enough for people to see.
ReplyDeleteBeing a woman, married and ttc isn't child's play, the emotional and financial commitment is too much, So there fore, such scams will strive especially in our society, where having kids first is an important feat in marriage.
It could be Cryptic Pregnancy Scam and it is rampant now.
ReplyDeleteAll pregnancy signs are present but no foetal presence seen on scan.
There are many stories about cryptic pregnancy. They claim only their facility can deliver. They recommend avoiding scans, stating they're unreliable.
They also direct when to deliver, once full payment is received.
And I don't think these women are knowledgeable about their situation. I believe they are being deceived.
During my antenatal some time ago, a midwife told us of a woman who has been claiming to be pregnant for two years now. The woman was invited to the hospital, did scan, examined by doctors including the nurse that invited her but she still insisted on being pregnant. Na so Dem leaves her ooh
ReplyDeleteDesperation can be blinding, and where logic sleeps, deceit thrives. This story paints a vivid picture of how the hunger for hope can make even the sharpest minds swallow fantasy as fact. Many women go through this dilemma, without realising they are pouring hope into a basket full of holes. While longing for a child is deeply human, skipping logic for illusions is where dreams turn to delusions.
ReplyDeleteFaith plays a powerful role in fertility journeys, it cannot replace medical truth. When a woman denies clinical evidence for concocted deception, it’s not stupidity - it’s untreated trauma, societal pressure, and internalised shame screaming louder than reason. Instead of mockery, we need mental health intervention, medical advocacy, and systemic re-education.
The real pregnancy here was emotional - a woman incubating hope while scammers harvested her vulnerability. I don't want to sugarcoat my comment, but hope without wisdom is a trap, and silence in the face of ignorance is complicity.
In many instances, we must teach ourselves to value truth over tradition, clinics over concoctions, and to listen not just to preachers, but to their bodies. Faith without sense is like driving blindfolded - you're bound to crash eventually. Real faith has eyes - and it checks with a scan.
Very well written, as usual.
DeleteMay God shine his face on all going to conceive mum...
