EFCC Arraigns Man For Defrauding Americans Of $525,276 in Fake Mining Investment Scheme

Victor Ekpong Thompson, a 52‑year‑old Nigerian, has been charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the Federal High Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, with eight counts of fraud alleging that he induced multiple U.S. citizens to send a total of $525,276 between April and December 2024 for purported investments in mineral mining and a deep‑sea port project in Nigeria.....


One specific count alleges he obtained $213,350 from some victims with intent to defraud in violation of Nigeria’s Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act. 
Thompson appeared before Justice Maureen Adaobi on January 29, 2026 and pleaded not guilty to all counts..
He was remanded in the EFCC detention facility in Uyo after the defence applied for bail and the EFCC opposed it...
The court adjourned to March 19, 2026 to rule on bail and to commence the trial.
