Thailand Police Arrest 6 Nigerians For AI Romance Scam Targeting Elderly Women

Thai police recently raided a high end riverside condominium in Nonthaburi province, near Bangkok, and arrested six Nigerian men. The suspects are accused of running a sophisticated romance scam using artificial intelligence to trick older Thai women.

Officers found the men living in expensive units while on student visas but none of them were actually studying or had legal jobs.
Police seized 18 mobile phones with active scam conversations, laptops, and bank records during the raid.
The group created fake online profiles pretending to be successful Western men like pilots, doctors, engineers, or US military officers. They used AI-generated faces and deepfake video calls to look real during chats. They built trust with lonely older women through sweet talk and “sexy chat” scripts. Then they asked for money to release supposed packages held by customs or for other fake fees.

The case came to light after police arrested one of the men, identified as Patrick, in April for cocaine trafficking. Money trails from that case led officers to the condo group.
The suspects, aged between 23 and 35, now face charges for illegal association and visa overstay. More fraud charges are likely to follow. Some had overstayed their visas for hundreds or even over 1,500 days.
