NUT Directs Teachers In Oyo State To Embark On Indefinite Strike Over Abducted Teachers And Pupils

Public primary and secondary schools in Oyo State will shut down from Monday, June 1, 2026, as the Nigeria Union of Teachers ordered all teachers to withdraw their services indefinitely. The union said the strike would continue until the teachers and pupils abducted in Oriire LGA are safely released.

The victims were taken on May 15, 2026, from schools in Ahoro‑Esinele and Yawota communities. About 39 pupils and seven teachers were abducted, and more than two weeks later, they remain in captivity, causing deep fear and frustration among teachers and parents.

The NUT national leadership issued a clear directive to the Oyo State wing, instructing all public school teachers to stay away from classrooms until the victims return home. The union described the situation as heartbreaking and unacceptable, insisting that the safety of teachers and learners must come first.
