The Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has renewed his promise to restore petrol subsidy if elected president in 2027, reopening a fresh national debate over the controversial policy.
Atiku, who campaigned for the removal of fuel subsidy during the 2023 presidential election, last week said he would restore the same policy if elected in 2027.

Former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has withdrawn from the 2027 governorship race in Oyo State after losing the All Progressives Congress, APC, ticket.
Adelabu disclosed his withdrawal in a statement he personally signed on Thursday, titled, ‘APC Nomination Process in Oyo State: Closing the Contest, Not Conceding the Injustice’.
The former minister stated that his decision to quit the race did not amount to conceding the alleged injustice that characterised the party’s governorship primary in the state.
He rather attributed his decision to deep reflection and a strategic reassessment of recent developments within the party and the journey ahead.

The former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate in Ondo State, Barrister Eyitayo Jegede, has resigned from the crisis-ridden party. Jegede, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, tendered his resignation in a letter dated August 7, 2026.

The Nigeria Police Force has invited social media activist, Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, to provide evidence backing his allegation that some police officers at checkpoints collude with kidnappers and bandits. The Force, in a statement on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, said it had taken note of comments made by Otse at the recent Nigerian Bar Association conference in Port Harcourt.

'Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, says his administration pays N6.7bn monthly from the state’s Federation Account Allocation Committee revenue to service loans inherited from the previous administration. Sani disclosed this on Channels Television’s Politics today on Thursday, saying the payments would continue until 2048.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, says it will continue its investigation into the utilisation of the N12 billion Federal Government intervention fund released to the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF.
This was confirmed by the EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, on Thursday.
“Investigation is ongoing on the matter,” Oyewale said.
The intervention fund, which was approved by President Bola Tinubu in 2024, was disbursed to clear outstanding wages and bonuses owed to players of Nigeria’s national teams.

The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrimes Centre (NPF-NCCC) has arrested 7 suspects over alleged cyber-related crimes, including business email compromise (BEC), money laundering, investment scam, identity theft, sextortion, blackmail. One of the suspects was arrested in July at Megamound Estate, Lekki, Lagos after a request from the Germany Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) to preserve data linked to an IP address reportedly used in a BEC. Another suspect, a technology company owner, was arrested in Agiliti, Lagos, over an alleged international investment fraud and money laundering.
The arrests were announced by AIG Akaninyene Ezima during a press briefing in Abuja. According to the police, forensic analysis of devices recovered from one of the suspects were more than 12.5 million email logs, which belong to victims in over 50 countries. His BVN was also linked to six financial institutions and fintech platforms. Police were able to recover a Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 purchased with the proceeds of crime. He was also accused of using phishing kits through Telegram to compromise accounts.
Two suspects were arrested in Anambra over alleged conspiracy, identity theft, impersonation, and computer-related fraud. They reportedly impersonated a government official on WhatsApp and Facebook. Investigations reportedly led to the recovery of dozens of registered and unregistered SIM cards and toolkits.
