The tension between UEFA and FIFA escalated sharply as UEFA confirmed it is preparing criminal claims against FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Switzerland.
The move follows allegations of criminal mismanagement linked to Infantino’s controversial attempt to sell a stake in future World Cup commercial rights to private investors.
According to filings made in U.S. courts, UEFA argues that Infantino pushed a secret plan to sell 20% of FIFA’s commercial arm including World Cup revenues to Thrive Capital for $4.2 billion, a valuation UEFA describes as “fraudulently off‑market.”
The European body claims Infantino bypassed FIFA’s Council and member associations, raising serious governance concerns.
UEFA has already filed applications in Manhattan and Florida seeking documents and testimony from FIFA entities and Thrive Capital. These filings support a planned criminal complaint under Article 158 of the Swiss Criminal Code, which covers criminal mismanagement.
If the complaint proceeds, Infantino could face criminal liability in Switzerland, marking one of the most significant legal challenges of his presidency.
