Going through the comments on the Chronicle yesterday, it seems almost everyone blamed the woman’s issue on depression/mental. How did we arrive at that conclusion? Or was it just because she’s a woman?
ReplyDeleteWould a man get the same response? I doubt it.
There was a similar Chronicle about a man sometime ago and we saw the reactions. He was called a "dirty man" and worse. Even his wife was told to run away before he infects her. Do you see how selective some of us are when it comes to gender? If a woman had sent in that complaint about a man, he would have been insulted. But here, even the men, myself included, were encouraging the husband to be patient and help his wife through it. We didn’t insult her or call her dirty. We didn’t tell him to leave her.
I know a lady in my area in her 20s who hardly bathes. Her clothes smell too. If she gets married tomorrow with that habit, people will still pin it on "depression" as usual.
We need to be objective in our reasoning and judgment. Everyone deserves fair treatment, man or woman. Only BV Apple pointed out the hypocrisy in the comments yesterday. I just don’t agree with her suggestion that the man should run away.
