Lagos State Govt Explains Why It Demolished Owonifari Market In Oshodi

The Lagos State Government says the demolition of Owonifari Market in Oshodi area of the state was done to further ensure security and bring sanity to the area.

The state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde, gave the explanation at a news conference on Thursday while clarifying issues involved in the demolition exercise.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the State Government on Tuesday shut the market and ordered relocation of affected traders and shop owners to the newly built Isopakodowo market stalls at Bolade in the area.
The market was demolished from Tuesday night till the early hours ofWednesday.
Ayorinde said that the traders were formally served a quit notice on Dec.21 before the demolition exercise, through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.
“It is important to be informed that the issue of that market had been on for nothing less than 10 years.
“The state government had been engaging with the leadership of the market to say that we could no longer continue with the manner in which that area of the market was being used.
“So, for 10 years, there has been back and forth engagement between the government and the leadership of the market,” he said.

Ayorinde said the leadership of the market, in the last three years, had refused to move.
“Certified that we have provided a befitting alternative, we started another round of engagement with the leadership of the market.
“The governor appealed to them through the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs.
“They met with members of the state executive on Dec. 16, 2015, where the governor reiterated his plans for Oshodi and the need to relocate them.
“A few of them expressed certain misgivings, but largely, they felt that if their interests were accommodated within the Isopakodowo market that they were willing and ready to move.
“We advised that discussions should be ongoing, particularly regarding how much they will pay for each stall within the market,” he said.

Ayorinde said that on Dec. 21, 2015, the governor went on a tour of the market, particularly Isopakodowo Market, where he again met with the leadership of the Owonifari Market.
According to him, it was eventually agreed that, based on the proposition from the market leaders, what they were willing to pay for each market was N5000 monthly.
“There is really no market anywhere that you will be paying such an amount in a month for a market.
“The governor agreed with them and we said we were ready to concede.
“Along the line, convinced that our new year project was to relocate them to Isopakodowo Market , we got intelligence reports that as at during the Yuletide, a number of criminal activities were going on there.
“We also got reports that the place was harbouring criminals and a number of untoward activities.
“This, of course, necessitated that we should move immediately to safeguard lives, property and to ensure that there was no breech of peace.
“This was what led to the demolition exercise,” Ayorinde said.

He said the intention of the government was certainly not to destroy any goods.
“We believe a good number of the traders, if not all, had moved because they were aware they needed to move.
“From reports, quite a good chunk of them acknowledged that they were properly served and that they were ready to move; many of them packed their things just before the end of the year.

“Government, I should say, will not be blackmailed because we have done everything humanly possible.
“We believe very strongly that Isopakodowo Market is quite ideal, a lot bigger than where they were”, he said.
Ayorinde said the aim of the government was to ensure that the area of the market confound to the desired Lagos.

  3. Well, something has to give way for development to occur. As long as it's for the better good of the nation, and they were duly warned, then it's ok. Truth is we nigerians get overly emotional and sentimental over things. We should apply our sense of reasoning before passing unnecessary judgment. This tribalistic card shouldn't be played here to evoke emotions.

  4. You see, for those spewing rubbish, and turning it to tribal ish, they've been on the issue for 10 years.

Same thing with Alade market. The day government will carry it's bull dozer there, they will start screaming for the governor's head.

No government will wake up and just start demolishing markets. It's a source of revenue to them too.

  5. While I agree with the demolition, they would have given them till end of January to pack out their belongings. Most of them have gone on holidays to their various states. It is painful but it is good that placed was demolished.

On 25th December, we were going on a convoy to the East with 3 cars. At that Oshodi Oke bridge there, 5 to 6 boys came out and decended on my brother's car. It was around 5.30 a.m. but I thank God they did not take anything from him or injured him. God was just with us.

That placed needs to be cleansed of criminal activities. The next is those danfos causing hold up on that Oke Bridge. Something need to be done about them.

  7. If they were duly served, they should have been adequately prepared then.
Although that doesn't make the pain any easier.

Development is all about tearing down, and building up.

    Make una take heart oo.

  9. Well if they were given adequate notice to move like they say, they are not to be blamed for demolition and also if they had goods in their shops at the time they came for them. Though I can relate with what the traders are going through.

  10. I know its for a good course, but they should at least relocated them to another plc before demolishing the market than leaving them to go bk to square one.

  11. Well,if this issue has been ongoing for years and the traders were served notice, then they should have been expecting this and cleared out before travelling. It doesn't make the pain easier though.Oshodi is a reckless zone.
    60k a year? That's quite cheap.

  15. I knew they were informed cos they won't be that heartless to just start demolition without notice! But some Nigerians they ll think it's a joke till they see it happening

  17. Idonbelivit. All are painted lies, I've also heard the full gist from the traders' side. This govt spokesperson forgot to mention that the case has been in court. Did the court agree with the demolition? Did d govt flout court orders? It's been on for more than 10yrs so Why couldn't Mr. Fashola demolish d market?

This present govt is able to achieve the demolition bc they were able to penetrate some of d traders thru the current chairman - the current chairman of d market is a Yoruba man while d deputy is Igbo. The chairman was bought-over by this govt and he refused to sign the money needed to pay their lawyer for d court case (by the market association). O ma se' ooo.

If they served them papers since Dec 16th, why then did the govt use the police/security to guard the market, preventing traders from packing their goods few days to 2016?

The story of security issues and harbouring criminals is the case of giving a dog a bad name to kill it. Almost all motor parks in Lagos are harbouring criminals, why has Mr. Ambode not destroyed them?

The truth ONLY will set one free, time will tell. God is watching.

Well, I do not know tom, do you?

    1. You guys can't seem to reason well once you go on this sentimental rant.

How do you believe they'd take the govt to court on a land they have no C of O on? Abi it is someone's land that the market is on, it is not the same Lagos State govt that owns the land that they have illegally occupied?

If you had any sense, you'd have asked the person who told you the cock and bull story what the legal grounds were. Abi na Dem get the land from their great grandfather's time?
