It will amaze you to observe how some of them try to cope. Imagine being in a relationship where your partner constantly makes you feel worthless, ugly and acts like you don't exist. For each day you remain in that relationship, a chunk of your esteem goes down the drain to the point where a mere compliment from a driver or a gardener or the random man across the street makes you light up like a christmas tree.
For some ladies, any man, regardless of his social status, who makes them smile and shows even the most remote concern or affection is a potential lover because they have been so psychologically brutalised that they will embrace anyone who gives them attention.
Another point to consider is that some women have very high libido and can't function normally without regular sexual satisfaction. Just because you are lucky enough to control your libido or haven't really experienced how amazing sex can be with the right person, shouldn't make you judge them with your standards.
Am I endorsing wantonness or rushing in and out of different relationships as a coping mechanism? Certainly not. All I'm trying to do make people understand that not many women can deal with a divorce or separation the way society expects them to. Until you experience something 1st hand, you may not appreciate the irony in criticisms. That's why I always have a sad smile on my face each time I see or hear people suggest divorce as the solution to the slightest marital inconvenience. It takes a lot to cope, especially when a person is already emotionally drained. The irony is, the same people who advised you to leave will be the same to judge you if you can't maintain a steady relationship.
If you are in an abusive relationship, do all you can to leave but be prepared to tackle a lot of challenges. It's not all rainbow and roses, it's by no way an instant cure for your heartache. Most times it gets really bad before it gets better but it's worth it at the long run because you get to keep living instead of dying.
