Labour Proposes N56,000 A New Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have jointly proposed N56,000 as the new minimum wage to the federal government as against the present N18,000.

The NLC president, Ayuba Wabba, said this at a news conference yesterday in Abuja.
Wabba, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said both the NLC and the TUC made the formal demand on the proposed national minimum wage to the federal government on Tuesday.

“I can say now authoritatively that as of yesterday (Tuesday) we made a formal proposal to the federal government of N56,000 to be the new minimum wage.
“The demand has been submitted officially to government and we hope that the tripartite system to look at the review will actually be set up to look at it.

“Our argument is that, yes, it is true that the economy is not doing well, but the law stated that wages for workers must be review after every five years.
“So the issue must be looked into by the federal government and workers should not be seen as sleeping on their rights,” the NLC president said at the forum.

Wabba recalled that the last review of the national minimum wage was done in 2011, saying the setting up of a tripartite committee to review the newly proposed national minimum wage was long overdue.

He said it was imperative that government should set up the tripartite committee for the review of the new minimum wage.

  6. I don't wana be a pessimist bt we all the newly proposed minimum wage is a big joke.
It ain't gona happen, not anytime soon and not in Nigeria.
56k? Like seriously??? Nonetheless commendable bt we'all know NAS won't look in2 it and it ain't gona fly
Rather than have an endless dialogue 2d detriment of the poor masses it'd be paramount they come up with a figure reasonable, obtainable and feasible

  12. There is nothing like great news. N18,000 is still too much for state governors to pay not to talk of N56,000. that means the governors will not eat 3 square meals.

  15. This is laudable (even though the money is damn too small) but I doubt if it will work. Many states are still owing several months salaries on top the miserable #18,000 they were forced to accept yet our USELESS 'senathieves' are busy padding the budget & buying unnecesary Suvs at inflated prices. They should slash their salaries & allowances to accommodate this (which they will never do)

  16. Abeg they should settle the ones they are owing first...on a second thought, this 56k go make sense die.Employers should please get ready

  17. Was the 18.000 minimum wage executed?
If no then what made labour think that they will get a listening ear?

  18. They'he not been able to pay 18000 now they are proposing 50+. This NLC and TUC is laughable.
If it ever happens, that is very good considering the fact that things are extremely expensive in the market.

  19. Good move. I know it may not be realistic but there's no harm in trying.
