Former Diplomat Ehenenden Erediauwa Is The New Oba Of Benin

Following the official announcement of the passage of the Oba of Benin last week, the man who will step into his shoes has emerged and his name is Ehenenden Erediauwa, Nigeria’s former Ambassador to Italy.

According to an insider who spoke to Loud whispers: “The Oba designate has served Nigeria in various capacities including working as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Italy. He is the late Oba’s first son and the Edaiken of Uselu.

“Ehenenden is a man who has paid his dues. His credentials also speak for him. After a rigorous and keen process, he has been selected as the man who will step into the shoes of the late Oba of Benin.”

Meanwhile, reasons are beginning to emerged on why the death of the late Oba was such a top secret. According to the same source: “The real reason his death was kept a secret was because they want to avoid fights over the throne from contenders to the throne.’’

The source added that a long time ago in Benin history, such announcements had resulted in bloody and violent fights that culminated in destabilizing the kingdom, hence, it became a tradition that when the Oba dies, his death is not announced until a worthy successor is chosen.
“The new law was enacted to allow for a peaceful and seamless transition. In fact, in those days, the first son never got to meet his father the Oba until the Oba is dead but due to western civilization, these practices have been watered down,” the source revealed.

Another reason for the secrecy trailing the Oba’s exit according to the source is that ascending the throne is not a tea party. The Oba elect has to perform cleansing rituals to prepare and fortify him for the challenges of his new office.

  5. Wrong reportage with uninformed mentality. Did u say selected after a rigorous process? That the person to be the new oba has emerged? My dear there is no process as the next oba is known even before he is born. There is no selection process at all not to talk of a rigorous one. Every first son of a living oba is the next oba. There is no contest about it even if he is an invalid or whatever for being the oba progenitor he is automatically the next oba. The Benin obaship is not contested or selected and is automatic and dosent need credentials. So your report is pure fallacy, unprofessional and repulsive and an insult to the reverend Benin Kingdom. What's wrong with our present days half baked journalist? And an editor allowed this hit the newsstand. Cheap journalism

    1. Sir, are you saying that there has never been any bloody clashes surrounding this issue in the history of Benin Kingdom? Why sound so arrogant and condescending in your comment?? Typical!

    2. You are so correct... There is no process in the selection of the new Oba. Although there might be some rituals carried out before coronation, maybe that is what Stella meant

    1. Dis report is absolute trash....we d binis don't fight for succession to d throne because we already knows who succeeds who when a reigning king joins his ancestors.. Prince ehenenden is succeeding his late father now...when his turn comes to depart dis world..his first son who is d crown prince will succeed him...note dat they start preparing them for such task right from when they are born..

  15. The first son of an oba is always the heir to the throne. Infact from birth he never gets to see his father physically till the father dies. It takes almost a year to announce the death of the oba because the rites involved is not beans. Finally on the day the heir apparent climbs the Palm tree, the entire Benin will be in darkness that period and he climbs it upside down. Only the chiefs involved will be present. Don't know if they still do all this rites. But that's the history told me by my grandmother, cos I was born on the day the late oba ascended the throne. March 15.
