According to Wike, they were dismissed because of their failure to attend a meeting organized by the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) led by the Chairman, John Momoh.
The stations whose MDs were sacked are: the Rivers State Television, Radio Rivers and Garden City Radio. Governor Wike said he was embarrassed that none of the state’s owned broadcasting parastatals honoured the meeting.
He also charged BON to always stand on the side of the people and speak the truth concerning the issues in the country at all times. BON is in the state for its 71st General Assembly meeting, which will be focusing on raising the bar in the digitalization of the broadcast industry.

The MDs should have sent representative.

ReplyDeleteThis is purely an abuse of power. How on earth can people be fired for failure to attend?? They don’t have to attend every Tom, Dick and Harry meeting. What happened to progressive discipline??
ReplyDeleteWike is overreacting. He might have had it in for these guys all along and just grabbed the slightest opportunity to get rid of them.
Bunch of incompetent people at the helm.
He has a right to hire and fire.
Deletevery stupid comment. what do you mean every tom dick and harry meeting? a stakeholders meeting? a general assembly meeting? I can bet you it is the same laxity they have to their jobs they displayed here.
DeleteIf someone can make a comment as silly and foolish as this. One can only wonder why we have incompetent people in the helm of affairs in the country.
DeleteGood for them.
ReplyDeleteGood to be self employed.
ReplyDeleteThose governor's have absolutely power over the state owned broadcasting establishments.
ReplyDeleteOne sitting governor of Oyo state ( now former governor) called the chairman of BCOS at the time and was angry that his wife's name was misspelled, the guy in charge that day was sacked just because of that.
So what should we do with your gist? ITK
DeleteEven if they were too busy to attend while not send a representative.
ReplyDeleteSo heads of TV and Radio from other states attended but none from the three state-owned outfits showed up, or at least sent a representative, despite being the host state of the BON Annual General Meeting. They successfully embarrassed the Governor and indeed the state, and yet some folks on here hv the temerity to criticize Wike for firing all three of them. In Fact, one of the three is always found frolicking with buddies at the PH Club Old GRA premises, and running his outfit from there by proxy and rarely ever being present at the office. I can bet Wike knew about such recklessness, and the BON visit confirmed it and got the governor to a breaking point. Sir! Wike!! Excellent call your excellency.
ReplyDeleteWell said anonymous 11:32.
DeleteA typical civil servant has a lackadaisical attitude when it comes to executing his/her job functions.

DeleteBroadcast quality in one of the radio stations headed by this particular person is at its lowest point in 37yrs, showing gross incompetence and a display of impunity of the highest order, laced with so much false confidence attributable to a perceived immunity by virtue of direct connectivity to the state legal structure. From his assumption of office up until his sack, the program structure of his immediate predecessors has remained unchanged showing a blatant lack of thought, creativity, and innovation, even the few personnel who obviously kept the station in competition were maliciously and sentimentally expelled by this person, confirming a myopic mindset even in the discharge of his duties. It is clear that he had no good intentions and nothing to offer towards the success of the radio station, and was only there to grab and misappropriate the financial resources due the radio station. One wonders why he was appointed with all these negatives and no positives. Good call Mr. Wike!
