Health Workers Arrested For Drugging And Stealing New Mom's Baby

The police has arrested two senior public health workers for allegedly stealing a newly born baby in Okundi in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The suspects were identified as Helen Bankong, a community Health Officer (CHO) in charge of the primary health facility in Katchuan Irruan, Boki and Theresa Odu.

It was gathered that the two health workers allegedly drugged the young mother of the child in the labour ward and lied to her when she regained consciousness that the baby had died.

According to an eyewitness, Mrs. Florence Kekong, who is a native of the community and the relation to the child’s mother, the nurses ran out of luck when family members insisted on seeing the dead baby or where she was buried.

The baby was later recovered at Idum Mbube in Ogoja LGA from a woman who bought her from the nurses. The two nurses and their client, who bought the baby, are now in police custody and the DG of the Primary Health Agency Dr Betta Edu, has vowed that they will be dealt with according to the law.
Dr. Edu, who confirmed the incident, said that the suspects, who delivered the baby (girl) at the primary health center in katchuan Irruan, took the baby to Idum Mbube, without the consent of the baby’s mother.

“We cannot tolerate these kinds of acts in the agency and characters like these should be locked up in jail,” she said.

She said Police were handling the matter and immediately that is done, she will take off from there.
