Mrs Dee's Corner -Allawee Savings

Who still remembers how much they saved at the end of service year?

I think we were amongst the second or third batch to be paid nineteen thousand, eight hundred naira.

The lady I served with in the same place of primary assignment was a better saver with less responsibilities. While I was able to save seventy thousand naira, she saved over two hundred thousand naira throughout our service year.

We were lucky to be sent to a private school where we were paid eight thousand naira monthly as state allowance and that was what we relied on for the duration of our stay. She never touched her federal allowance.

Every Thursday, we would visit the local market after CDS and shop for vegetables and fruits. We bought locally made coal pot and shared a bag of charcoal which sold for eight hundred naira and lasted close to two months for both of us.

I couldn't save as much as she did because I sent money to my mum once I was paid and my siblings were not left out.

When I moved to Lagos, part of the money I saved was a fall back on before I got a job.

Now that things are so hard,I wonder if any Corps member get to save anything at all......

*Save during Service year?I didnt even know how to save...Once money came in,I would buy everything i needed and send money to those who needed...After service year,I was broke, busted and disgusted...lol

  1. I can't remember how much i was able to save, but it wasn't much.
Asides the 19,800, my PPA was paying me 20,000.
I was sending most of my money to my family in Lagos for rent, upkeep, e.t.c.
Luckily for me, i got a job about 4 months after POP. Pay isn't much, but we still manage to get by.
Reason why till today, i can't boast of any tangible amount as savings.
I contribute to rent, feeding and sundries, still send money to my aged grandma when i can.
But life goes on, they're the only family I've got.
    And I'm female.

  2. I saved all my money. I never went to the bank till after service.

I was paid 8k and the extra I get from the office, parents and boyfriend was enough to sustain me.

  4. I saved most of my allowee money... My PPA paid me 30k monthly plus my pops usually gave me allowance. I had no responsibilities nor bills as I served in the state where my parents live and my work place was literally 5 minutes away from my house. I just used my allawee to flex and enjoy and I was still able to save almost 130k of it.

  5. I served in funtua, due to distance n small small complaints, I was still given allawee from home plus d stipend from my ppa, so my federal allawe was intact, at d end of my service year I dipped hand n bought gold...that time a carat was 8000, so I emptied it on gold..which I kept till today, clean...I will sell it but not now...let d value keep rising.

  10. I plan to save during my service year ,at least half of the allawee monthly
From my sister's experience one needs to have an emergency account incase of any surprises.

I saved like 80k, my dad ask me to use one of the shop in front of our house when a job wasn't coming forth. I used like 50k for the salon and 30k for transport fare to interviews, the savings really helped me o.
I love to make hair but I didn't focus on the salon then my eyes was on white collar job. People came to apply for apprenticeship I declined because I felt sooner or later I'm going to stop this salon. Smiles. Well I got the white collar job like after a year and all my savings and experience gathered, my dream is still to open a salon and supermarket. Sometimes I feel I was unwise by not running the salon with my whole mind then. But working in an organisation has enlightened me more on entrepreneurship.
If you are a corper and you want to save your alawee I advice you to put your the money in Stanbic money market. You invest your money rather than leave it idle in that savings account that doesn't generate any profit. I wish I knew all this earlier. It is well

  15. I saved 220k...my PPA paid us 1k per month, I served in a village in Ogun state. I was surviving on 500 naira per week plus recharge card and every, every. This was the same period buhari came into power and made life tough for everyone. It wasn't so hard tho cause I was used to managing even as a student. The savings really went a long way for me after NYSC, I used it to learn fashion design, bought a sewing machine and was sustaining my self for about a year and a half.
    I had no responsibilities sha.

    2. Ogun state don't pay their corpers, but my PPA, a secondary school gives kerosene allowance 1,000 naira monthly

    3. 500 per week? Hmm that's cos no responsibility though.. And no disturbance from siblings, parent and you must have shun many trying to get assistance from you.. I never spent 5k for myself throughout my service year, I just don't know why my habit of giving increases on a daily basis.. Good for you though

  16. I was able to save all my allowances during NYSC. I had little or no responsibility. The sch where i taught gave us corpers lodge to live, we were some times given foodstuffs by the sch principal and villagers and i also bring food stuffs from home so, i barely bought food stuffs. My bf den wld always recharge my phone and subscribe for me and my parents wld always send me tfare to travel back home wen its holiday time and besides going to the bank was like travelling to another state, very far. So wen u tink of the journey to d bank sef, u wld just give up and leave d money dere. I was using the allowance d sch pays us to buy d minor things i need. There was this relief i had knowin dat i wasnt passing out empty. That i had something to fall back on pending when i get a job. Luckily for me, i got a job a month after NYSC, so my money was stil safe.

  17. Shingbai, I've not been able to save. The ones I managed to save, I end up spending when I'm dead broke. No state allowee, my PPA is federal government institution, no salary. By the time I remove transport fare, buy foodstuffs, upkeep (airtime, data and toiletries) I'm left with nothing by the 2nd week. I'm just tired of this NYSC and can't wait to pass out next month.
I really don't know what the future holds yet, but I know God will come through for me and I'll get a job soon after POP. I feel like a bad child as my Mum should have been enjoying fruits of her labour by now from me her only child

  24. This saving of a thing depends on how much u get from your PPA and maybe state allowance (if any). Here in kwara and where we have no state allowance, and even PPA paying 2-3k Stella it's very hard for a Lagos boi like me.. Later became the CLO where nothing was paid aside 19800.. Well I managed to add values with the money by engaging in SAED (Shoe making precisely and its worth it, also did some professional exam (Project management, Human resource Management and Customer Service Relation Management) which I Wil be getting the Certificates today.. Can't attend the induction cos no kudi for akant.. I don't really believe in holding tight on to money, I always use it to add value cos those values will bring the ones I will save I feel..
