Actress Funke Akindele Bello Reportedly Arrested For Throwing Crowded Party Despite COVID19 Lockdown And Social Distancing Directive

Lagos State Police Command has arrested Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele-Bello for hosting a house party to celebrate her husband, AbdulRasheed Bello, in contravention of the lockdown order in Lagos.

According to Punch, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana said the actress had been taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba.

“Yes, we have (arrested) Funke Akindele and we are looking for the others. She has been taken to SCID,” Elkana was quoted to have said.

The policemen were reported to have arrived in Amen Estate off Lekki-Epe Expressway in about three patrol vehicles.

On Saturday, April 4, 2020, the actress threw a party that had over 20 people in attendance to celebrate her husband.

Nigerian singer, Naira Marley and Akindele-Bello's friend, Eniola Badmus were at the party.

Mr Babatunde Gbadamosi, a businessman and politician, who was the Governorship Candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in the 2019 election was also at the party.

Following the arrest of the actress, Gbadamosi took to his Twitter page to apologise, saying he had gone to the Bello's residence thinking he would only meet the family and their staff.

Gbadamosi in a 1 minute 30 seconds video he shared on Twitter said he regretted not leaving the residence before a celebrity came into the house with some people.

Meanwhile, Nigerians on social media had severely criticised Akindele for hosting a house party during a lockdown in the state.

The actress, who is said to be an ambassador for the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control and Dettol was also criticised had recently appeared in adverts telling Nigerians to observe social distancing.

Following the social media criticism, the actress apologised to everyone who felt offended by her action.

*Hmmmm this Politician has contradicted her report of everyone being for in the house since two weeks....So he arrived there yesterday and so did others...she should not have done that video at all or just left it at an apology..
I pray she is let out soon, lesson learnt..Others will

If she didnt host would they have been there? Both the hoster and hostees (not real words) should be punished. Lagos just isnt the place for this to be happening.

Just that where I am, you can only be arrested if you are seen on the streets, cos that is a direct violation of the lock-down order. The cops ain't looking inside homes. Arresting someone from their homes is another legal process altogether. But as Stella said, she posted evidence when she posted the videos, so...

    10. I get your point. The convener and the convened should ALL face the law. Funke invited them so she was the one that organized the law-breaking activity. The adults that carried their dumb asses there to expose little children, domestic staff and fellow Nigerians to COVID-19 also need reorientation in Panti. A promising politician is telling me he was on house calls during curfew and was only expecting family- bro, you were supposed to observe the lockdown and connect via Skype. ? Naira Marley that government has sewn his prison uniform still thinks Amen estate is an apartment and Eniola that knows she is susceptible to this disease is still moving about? What's wrong with people?

JJC in particular should be flogged. Your wife is feeding the entire family. You should have locked the door and made it clear that no party is holding today. You should have told her to consider her brand and career. Is it "we are Africans" that was sang by 3 other people that is going to feed all those children and pay mortgage? Many women like funke overcompensate for their men when they are the breadwinner and sometimes, that can cause real problems. If this guy was fending for himself, she won't need to throw a party, breaking the law but an intimate dinner would do before breaking the bed. Instead, you want to nurse his ego and now your own market is spoiling. A man that would lodge like 4 extra kids in your house and still not do his part to help you keep it... SAD. I hope she has good help watching the kids for her. We all should do better please.

Responsible people won't even gather people in their homes for a party at this time just because, "The cops ain't looking inside homes."

The health "minister" in the UK has Just being relieved of her duties for violating a law she put out. She was "pictured" outside and was called out till the government bowed to pressure.

A lady couldn't give a good reason why she was on the train and has been fined £86k.

I like Funke. But they goofed on this one. Her husband putting out that video was all people needed to go crazy.

      They should have stayed silent.

It would have blown over pretty quickly and no one would have gone searching for videos, zoomed and in the process, a prominent former Lagos state governorship aspirant and his wife were also identified.

    6. Eka, I can’t believe you are in the USA and are not aware that police are arresting people here for breaking social distance directives.

This case is similar as to what happened with Funke:

“Police are also cracking down on house parties. In New Jersey, police broke up a party of more than 30 people after responding to a noise complaint in Penns Grove last weekend, the state's Attorney General said in a news release.

Partygoers were seen making videos and posting them on social media, according to the New Jersey Attorney General. The party host, Jacquon Jones, was charged with disorderly conduct for holding a large party in violation of the emergency order prohibiting large gatherings.

The fines and punishment for violating orders differ by state.

In Maryland, Gov. Larry Hogan said that those who violate the stay-at-home order could face a misdemeanor and be jailed for up to one year or fined $5,000.

In New York City, residents who violate social distancing rules face fines ranging from $250 to $500, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio.“

    4. Eka, abeg nau. You keep calling Nigeria a zoo and yet, you can't recognise that the difference between Nigeria and your new home is the value of the rule of law. All over the world, people are being fined and arrested for breaking the stay home directive from the government. This is what Prof Soyinka wrote that the stay home directive should follow due process from parliament instead of a Draconian pronouncement that can be overturned by a court or abused by an fascist government.

If a celebrity is caught drunk-driving or faking a hate crime, loosing your job or endorsement is not the concern of government but rather, the fine or court case which they are to file. Should we say Harvey Weinstein should be released because he lost his job? I know it is an extreme example but even the Dein of Agbor was arrested in the USA for bad driving and the Oluwo was questioned/arrested then suspended for behaving like a tout.

Don't let us be like those Nigerians that bring the attitude you described in those "African areas" to the developed world. Let funke face her music. She could have ordered cake for her actors and had a Snapchat celebration with her kids and husband in their living room but aunty decided to convert Amen estate to an apartment and flout the rules. Someone who was paid to advertise them. A good lawyer would get her out in a few hours but she and her husband need their ears pulled. And why was JJC not arrested? With all the other guests?

Nigerian police should be given the authority by the Legislature to issue fines in instances like this.

Arresting and keeping her in the police station is a risk on it's own. We do not want this virus spreading so unnecessary arrests should be reduced.

Issue a warning, impose fines or even compulsory quarantine will suffice. The money should be donated towards the fight against Covid19.

Doctors and nurses and other health workers are begging people to maintain social distancing and stay in doors as much as possible in order to reduce the spread of the virus but your star girl is doing opposite of what these hardworking people are begging us to do, thereby sabotaging their efforts.Liking a star girl doesn’t mean you should support any nonsense they do, and yes she must face the consequences of her actions along with others that attended the party to serve as a deterrent to others that are intending to be unfortunate as she should know better being an ambassador of the NCDC

  21. Stella, I think she meant that they were all in Amen estate, not necessarily her house.
Anyway, that still doesn't make it okay. The issue is that she had a gathering of more than the allocated number. They also didn't observe the 2m distance rule.
The point of a lockdown is to minimize close contacts. Over here pre-lockdown, the average number of contacts of a diagnosed case was 15. 15 people to trace, test and go into isolation. Post lockdown, the average number of close contacts is 2.
If anyone from this party tests positive in the next 2 weeks, it's a lot of people to trace, isolate and test. Considering these guests are returning to their respective homes.
An unnecessary risk. And I agree, she should've just apologized in the video. No need for all the story

  36. I hope JJC isn't ill because I don't get how you let your wife be arrested by police and then you dodge to let her face the music alone. He was also at HIS party. Why not pick him up or give him too?

  39. I am just amazed that they kept on organizing the party without an iota of the repercussion that would follow up. One would think he is celebrating sweet sixteen or eighteen and without this particular party, life would be snuffed out of him. When you sum up their ages ( bello and funke) one would think that a little wisdom would come out of their brain. I pray she comes out of it without a scratch and she wouldn't blame village people for her ordeal.
