Hello Stella,
Love your page!! Been a constant visitor for over 5 years. Your LRD and Omugwo Series are my favorite reads.
Buckle up guys this is a long read.
Here's my story.. Giving birth in the time of Covid.
My pregnancy was bliss!! It definitely wasn't planned however DH and I knew the exact moment it happened. I was meant to get my period on that day and had been getting mild cramps (my cycle was quite regular at that point, no birth control lol).
So i told DH i was certain my period would come in a day, so it was our safe window. Naaaa, biology had other plans.
We live in the UAE, and while at work i told my colleague i had missed my period.. she shrieked and said she definitely felt i was pregnant and accompanied me to the pharmacy downstairs to get a pregnancy test. She waited outside the bathroom as i took it and we cried together at the result.
Weird place to find out right, in the toilet where i work.
I was in shock and ran home to tell DH..was crying on the way thinking of all the many things i couldn't eat anymore lol.
He was so excited and our beautiful journey began.
I was in shock and ran home to tell DH..was crying on the way thinking of all the many things i couldn't eat anymore lol.
He was so excited and our beautiful journey began.
I never threw up the whole pregnancy, was glowing the whole time and gained very little weight. At 9 months pregnant i looked like i was 6 months gone. Infact i worked up until the labour room, that was how easy the pregnancy was.
So now to the main gist. I had my baby in April when the lockdown was in full effect, masks..gloves and everything was compulsory. To leave the house we had to apply online for an emergency hospital visit, and only after an approved sms could we step out.
It was meant to be a routine antenatal check up. My OB then decided to check my cervix, she quickly told me i was 3cm gone and in labour. I looked at her in shock, wow i haven't felt anything. I was quickly admitted and 2 hours later giving drip for induction.
I have read many stories saying how painful inducing was. I still felt nothing 24 hours later (I was still working in the hospital room lol) and i was gradually progressing, up until 7cm.
Now this is where it all began. OB came to check again, like "wow you are really strong, you're over 7cm gone and you've felt nothing." She then proceeded to break my water, oh LORD.
Stella!! It felt like a train on fire was going in and out and in and out of me, over and over and over. Gosh the first wave hit me like molten lava was poured all over me. I screamed at her, like WHYYY would you do that, whyyy... i was doing fine!! Whyyy did you have to tamper with everything. I was maadd..
Quickly told my husband and nurses i needed the epidural ASAP (this was after the first wave oh). I flung my mask and gloves, F*×# it!!! Who cares about covid!! I need this baby out now. The pain was out of this world.. i was snarky to the midwives, and closed my legs.. I'm not having this baby without an epidural!!
The midwives tried to stall me as i had gotten to 8cm+
I told my husband, I AM NOT PUSHING without that epidural, make sure I'm given that epidural, these people think I'm playing. I couldn't imagine pushing with that pain, I'll just tear anyhow.
An hour later the anesthesiologist arrived. He started to introduce himself - I'm doctor blaaah blaaah and i would be bllaaahh blaa.. i screamed at him ''i dont care who you are, give me my epidural!!''
He says oh the nurses are getting it ready.. i screamed at him again '
so you came here without it, what are you good for!!'
so you came here without it, what are you good for!!'
My husband at that point started to get very anxious and told them he could tell they were stalling as i was almost fully dilated and they wanted me to attempt pushing.
Ah my legs were closed oh.. not happening without an epidural
I was eventually given one after about 90mins. Now phase 2 of wahala.
My pain went away, couldn't feel my legs and i couldn't push when it was time.
The ward was full of doctors and midwives, at least 7-10 people..
"Push push push push push, baby is in a bad position" was all i kept hearing. I felt like i was pushing but naaa, my body wasn't. I hadn't eaten in over 24hrs at this point.
The OB had to use a vacuum on baby's head and gave me a 'nice' cut. At this point DH almost fainted.. they had to get him a chair and water.
I told DH not to look down there, and stay fixed behind me. Baby's head descended again and the OB said "few more pushes i can see baby's head, lots of hair." DH went to look again and almost collapsed the 2nd time. The nurse guided him back to the chair.
Every time i tried to push, i only 'sucked' baby back in, if that makes sense.. so i vaguely remember been given another cut. At this point Hubby got dizzy again (3rd time) and had to sit behind me holding my hands.
2 midwives kept taking turns to compress and push down on my tummy to assist in pushing baby out. That was another world of pain. I pleaded "please let me push out myself" and when they wouldn't listen i punched one of them. The other midwife took over and kept compressing my stomach.. that pain was almost as worse as the contractions.
The whole place was so bloody, felt like a cow had been slaughtered. And after 2hours our little one was born. He had the cone head due to the vacuum suction but all went down after 3weeks thankfully. I was able to walk a few hours later and We were discharged 2 days after.
Due to the lockdown, we had no one with us, no visitors either.. had to do omugwo on our own. 3 months in and thankfully we're doing fine, we've learnt a lot and grown so much. This is one experience that has bonded DH and I so much closer. He's scared of having another kid lol and is suggesting CS for next time ha.
Thank you for reading and Stella, and as every mum says, picture for your eyes only..
WOW.......interesting and intriguing story!!!!.....
Your hubby even tried, mine was shaking like a leaf,it was so bad eh...
congratulations,your baby looks so cuteeeeeeeeeee!!!
Very interesting. Lol, thank goodness, I was able to read this one. I'm always scared of this post. God bless all the beautiful mothers we have.
ReplyDeleteThat's one the disadvantage of epidural anaesthesia in labour. It will take the pains away and the urge to push will disappear. That intense labour pains is what gives women the urge and strength to push that baby. Once you're given an epidural if care is not taken you might end up with assisted delivery or even C/S.
DeleteCongratulations madam. May God bless your cute one greatly.
Congrats dearie....
ReplyDeleteChai, women go tru a lot during childbirth. Congrats on your new bundle of joy.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Madam.
ReplyDeleteYour husband is a strong man, i doubt my husband can put up with the sight of blood. Lol. Godbless your home
I am only 6weeks gone, but the thought of labour gives me chills...
Mine can stand the sight of blood o...congratulations. ....did you apologise to the nurse you punched?

You guys really tried. Congratulations. Plix just do CS next time jejely
ReplyDeletecongratulations, women are really strong.
ReplyDeleteCongrats poster, but i thought they dont give epidural once you reach 8cm
ReplyDeleteThey can give it at any stage of labour. But it's preferably given at the first stage.
DeleteHei. Nigerian first daughter ooo.
DeleteIt's preferably given in second stage.
This was what happened to me. I got to the hospital at 3cm and the midwife decided to wait 2hrs to check again and make sure I was in active labour. She checked an hour later and I was already 8cm and she said its too late for an epidural. I suffered and tore anyhow.
DeletePls I heard there are bad repercussions or side effects of epidural ... is this true ? Me I intend using it o . Congratulations mama
ReplyDeleteEvery procedure has its own good and bad. Consult with your anaesthetist to decide what's best for you.
DeleteWow...congratulations Ma. In less than a month I'll go into Labour and I pray I don't experience any drama. The thought of it is really scary. God bless all the mothers cos it's not easy.
ReplyDeleteGod will see you through.
DeleteAmen, God will see you through
DeleteCongratulations ma'am,God bless you and yours. I don't feel pains too until the water is broken and I'm always induced as I don't fall labour.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations
ReplyDeleteLovely read. See me laughing. Congrats to you and hubby.
ReplyDeleteNow I can read Labour room drama without any worries...this time last year I will read the beginning, skip the middle and go straight to the end of the story... Mine was a lot lot of drama.... I had tear from Vaginal to Anus because my baby was too big and doctors were on strike so no theater for surgery...when the doctor was trying to push my anus back into place so he can sew, I shouted please doctor I am not gay ooooooo....three nurses climbed my stomach like the poster and started pushing baby down but for where? Until I heard praprapra sound, I looked dowm and saw the doctor tear the whole area, deep his hand and pull the baby in anger, pulled placenta too.... he was just scared for the baby and my hubby was crying so he had no choice.
ReplyDeleteInfact I still clamp my legs whenever I remember all I went through..
Hubby said no more babies o.
But i want a boy next and I close shop.

ReplyDeleteI laughed while reading this. Congrats on your baby. I think when the time comes, I'd want CS o, I can't stand pain.
ReplyDeleteRecovering from CS is also not easy. Would love to send my birthing stories too but since both are CS I don't think they qualify for Labour room drama.
DeleteBear pain*
ReplyDeleteCongrats, interesting read
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your story. Congrats to your family π₯°
ReplyDeleteCongratulations posterπ
ReplyDeleteWhat are the side effects of epidural, am saving for one I heard its costly in Nigeria.
ReplyDeletePlease help, my threshold for pain is 0.0000000001
Its not costly in teaching hospitals. When next you go for your ANC tell the Dr attending to you you're interested in epidural. The Dr will refer you to Anaesthetist that will tell you everything you need to know about epidural and the cost involved. The range in teaching hospital is usually between 50-100k maximum. I don't know about private hospitals.
DeleteHa! 50-100k is expensive o! How much remain to complete CS money?!
Delete@anon 17:15.
Delete900k is remaining for some people, 2m for some people, 50k for others.
Cheap is relative.
Congratulations..
ReplyDeleteCongrats mama.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations
ReplyDeleteCongratulations
ReplyDeleteYou really gave those nurses and doctors a tough oneππ
Congratulations.. God bless all women and remember those waiting to share this kind of experience.
ReplyDelete(At this point DH almost fainted.. they had to get him a chair and water. few more pushes i can see baby's head, lots of hair." DH went to look again and almost collapsed the 2nd time. The nurse guided him back to the chair.
ReplyDeleteAt this point Hubby got dizzy again 3rd time) - Lol πππππ
Interesting LRD.

I'm almost 41weeks pregnant with no sign of labor yet. Y'all should put me in your prayers as am worried sick because this is my first pregnancy. Congratulations to you poster. Your joy shall be permanent.
ReplyDeleteMadam, 41 weeks?! That baby no longer has any business in your womb o! You had better hurry to the hospital now. Infact a CS may not be a bad idea o!
DeleteYour baby shall come out well and you shall deliver safely. Congrats in advance
DeleteCongratulations poster,God bless your baby.
DeleteSo i want to debunk the rumours abt epidural.
ReplyDeleteEpidural is 100% safe and pain free if administered properly!!!
