NIS Stops 58 Nigerian Doctors From Travelling To London By Chartered Flight

THE Nigeria Immigration Service, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, has stopped the departure of 58 Nigerian Doctors, who attempted traveling aboard a UK bound aircraft flight number ENT 550, registration number SP-ES that flew in from London.

Fifty-six of the doctors had no Visa for entry to the United Kingdom, while only two had visa.

The medical doctors were stopped from travelling in line with Section 31 subsection 2a and b, on powers conferred on the comptroller general of Nigeria Immigration Service by the Immigration Act 2015, to prohibit departure of any person under the conditions stated in the Act.

The chartered flight approved for landing in Nigeria was to carry 42 medical doctors for a training programme but they were 58 with only two having Visa for entry into UK, a situation that calls for refusal of departure.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service as the agency saddled with control of entry and departure from Nigeria of persons will not allow individuals or groups of well-educated Nigerians who should know the procedures for travelling out of their country and the requirements, which include having a valid visa for entry into a destination country to leave,” a statement by James Sunday, spokesperson of NIS and made available to Realnews on Friday, July 10, said.

According to him, “This is to avoid refusal of entry and repatriation back to Nigeria amidst Covid-19 pandemic and spreading of same as well as flouting the Federal Government’s directive on the restriction of international flights unless for essential reason as approved by the government.

“There is no official communication to the Service from the Ministry of Health in Nigeria or any known Medical body notifying the NIS of the travel of this number of Medical Doctors. The Aircraft has departed for London without the Medical Doctors.

“The Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service, Muhammad Babandede, MFR, is taking this opportunity to advise Nigerians to always adhere to travel protocols and ensure they have Valid passports with Valid Visa to the country they intended travelling to before going to any Airport, Seaport or Land Border Control to avoid refusal to depart.”

    1. The arrangement was to grant them visas on arrival and they all had documentations to that effect. This arrangement was put in place by a UK organisation and I'd like to believe this was communicated rightly to the appropriate organisations.

I wonder why the NIS stopped them.

  3. Why are they moving out in such a large quantity like that. To make matter worse, with no visa. What were they thinking huuhhh. They should go back to their respective work places and continue to help Nigeria fight this pandemic. Onweghi ebe ha na aga biko

  7. They were given a waiver and would be given visa on arrival as Embassy was shut down in Nigeria.
Most countries during this pandemic are looking for doctors from other countries and this was the case here.
You think it is easy for these doctors in Nigeria.
Anybody that has the opportunity to leave this country Abeg do and serve your country with intergrity and uprightness from overseas.

Next time any doctor that wants to travel should please go through Cotonou

  8. Awon bad belle. Did they bother to find out the plan behind the travelling without passport? You think people like that would be refused entry.

Probably people that will get visa on arrival.

  10. If only Nigerians put 1% of the effort they make to "travel abroad" into
seeking for eternal life and living the abundant life in Christ?
These people finished medical school without knowing any other thing?
In London, they will become wanderers and fugitives, always running from
immigration and never practicing medicine. What a shame! 🀸🏻‍♀️🀸🏻‍♀️🀸🏻‍♀️🀸🏻‍♀️🀸🏻‍♀️🀸🏻‍♀️🀸🏻‍♀️🀸🏻‍♀️🀸🏻‍♀️🀸🏻‍♀️🀸🏻‍♀️🀸🏻‍♀️🀸🏻‍♀️🀸🏻‍♀️

    2. You got it all wrong. Find out the full details first. Don't also be too quick to pass judgement...okay!
For them to even be travelling at this time should at least tell you that they were sent for. An organization came to pick them up from UK. This wasn't a backyard deal.

    3. Anon 11.47/ANG, all you do is castigate people for wanting to relocate from Nigeria! Does abroad exist for only you? Did anybody tie your hands and legs there for you not to return to Nigeria? Are you in jail abroad? Why don you go back to Nigeria and better it and also enjoy your salvation there! Or does salvation have address??

      Bloody irritant!...

    5. What do you know? Shior, no be only wanderers na scavengers.I wonder why you people start hyperventilating when people choose to relocate, must everyone live in Nigeria???

  11. Well, they've all been employed by the NES and their employer has applied for a visa waiver for them to come over, that was why the airplane was cleared by the UK authorities to come pick them. NIS are just trying to be clever by half probably because they weren't duly 'settled' as per naija ways....

    ReplyDelete
  12. They will still leave because they have all obviously passed their licensing exam. U can’t practice in UK without passing plab 1&2. It’s just a matter of time because UK has been calling on those that have gotten jobs there but are held back due to embassy closure. This just opened the eyes of everyone to the truth about exodus of doctors. Those 58 will leave very soon and more are still going to leave

  13. We are in this together. No leave, no transfer 🀣

  17. They should have allowed them go, will they just pack and go to the UK without an invite? Did they investigate?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Stella you are on the wrong side of this. Every single one of this Doctors has a duly signed contract. They also all have a visa waiver. NES Healthcare UK who employed them sent a plane for just them. That plane left empty
. Honestly, I m impressed. I didnt know NES had so much money and clout.I work for them as well. And they only lodge me at the holiday inn when I go to work. With this now,I ll be demanding Hilton.
This also opened my eyes to how bad the brain drain is. 58 in one fell swoop. I welcome them all to the UK and wish them well. But Please let's not forget our people in Nigeria. Forget the polithievcians. Dont forget your people.

  19. Most of you are too naive. Even if they had visas and all documentations it would have been wrong to allow them leave. Their education was heavily subsidized by government, why should they be allowed to leave when we a medical crisis in our nation. Nobody stops them from leaving when there is no crisis. If they succeeded in leaving others will also leave. Maybe next time 120 will leave in one night . Eventually those of you ranting dust won't have any doctor to treat you and your family when you fall sick.

    1. Then treat them well so they won’t want to leave. How many Nnpc staff want to leave? How many CBN staff want to leave, what about politicians? Treat them well and remember the risk they face when handling them. If not let them go hoohaa

    2. Alexander, are you aware that even in the middle of this same medical crisis, the Nigerian government have decided to slash the budget for HEALTH AND EDUCATION just to renovate the national assembly complex???

So pray tell, who is fooling/deceiving who?...

    3. You want them to stay in Nigeria and be earning peanuts while the thieves/louts in power smile to the bank?
Are you aware that in this era of COVID-19 most healthcare professionals have not been provided with PPEs?
Nepotic leaders and ethnically-inflamed masses, crooks in power and docile citizenry; that is the story of Nigeria.

    4. Anon God bless you, so because their course was heavily subsidised they should wallow in suffering. Ideally with the amount of money Nigeria was making and still making everybody should be paid a stipend for simply being born a Nigerian excluding having a good job and all basic necessities a human being should enjoy. If the only thing they gained from Nigeria is subsidised education biko free them. They have paid their dues and paid in full. How much where they paid while working here. How many of them had good working conditions while working here. Biko free them.

    5. Where I work, so many doctors got infected (>20) that at a time the hospital had to seriously scale down services, and all this because basic things like facemasks weren't made available. This despite the fact that the basic hazard allowance that healthworkers have been asking for, still hasn't been paid.
Abeg, those that can, should leave. Leave to where the work will be meaningful and make meaning

    6. Why should I stay? Nigeria has not done anything for me apart from being born in this country. I had private education for primary and secondary school. I studied medicine abroad. So when did Nigeria subsidize education for me?

      Delete
  20. Nigerian doctors need to start paying 5milion naira yearly for tuition. Their education is heavily subsidized with tax payers money and yet they don’t stay back to serve the same Nigerians that subsidized their fees. It’s only fair for them to pay millions in tuition so I’m the long run their will be no loss when they leave after school.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. And other courses don’t have their school subsidized?School fees is subsidized for every course. Why do u think most people don’t go to university abroad ? Even with your so called subsidy Medical students pay more in terms of school fees and other dues. So if ur mentality is right NOBODY should relocate

  21. They should not allow them go anywhere abeg . Who's going to take care of the sick people in Nigeria? Have they forgotten our national anthem? In fact FG should enforce the reciting of the anthem everyday, maybe our system can change. We shouldn't be a dysfunctional country. From the head to the lowest should help make Nigeria better as it was, it's our collective responsibility.

    1. Abeg wetin u dey talk?? The reciting of the anthem should start at NASS, then maybe it will reduce the looting. Pls anyone who can, should japa. Patriotism ko, parasitism in.

  22. Stella, I'm in this situation and I hope to travel within the coming weeks with my waiver. Please ask if any BV was among the 58 doctors or their family and friends. So we can get the other side of the story, I don't believe this NIS.

Nigeria has not done anything for me, my parents paid for private education for me from primary school to studying medicine abroad. When i got back about 6years ago filled with hope to work in Nigeria, first did and passed the MDCN exam, to get placement for internship was hellish.

After getting the job, salaries were not regular. I pitied my parents and myself because all seemed like a waste just because of the broken system we know as Nigeria. I had to do IELTS, Plab 1&2. Those exams were neither cheap nor easy but I knew I couldn't continue to stay in Nigeria frustrated and not achieving anything.

What about my siblings? Story for another day, I never believed in the abroad life. Probably because I'm from a wealthy home, I thought I could have a better life in Nigeria. Now, anyone that can leave legally should please do. Nigeria is not worth dying for.

  23. Let them leave, please.

I knew there was more to this story! There is a waiver and visa on arrival.

Why stop them when successive governments have failed Nigerians? No plans for or investments in the teeming Nigerian youths.

The same government officials that loot public funds and stash it abroad in offshore accounts. What moral standing do they have to stop Nigerian doctors or any citizen from traveling abroad?

Don't forget Nigerians in living abroad repatriate 4 times more foreign exchange from their earnings than what the country earns from crude oil export annually.
