The Adventures Of Oko Ashawo The Uber Driver - 63

This is a teary post alert oh.............

I got teary-eyed as I drove my passenger home last night. The discussion i had with her brought lots of pain because it took me down memory lane.

At about 8pm, I received an order from a guy that required me to drop his girlfriend at home. He was all over her and they kissed multiple times before he let go of her since she would be travelling back to school the next morning. In my mind, I was just saying love is a sweet thing o.

One thing I noticed about this girl who is in her early twenties is that she was really cheerful and in high spirits. I saw that she was sweating when she got into the car and as I put on the AC, she asked me to turn it off saying it’s not good for her health. This stirred my curiosity.

We got talking and I teased her that she’d really miss her boyfriend. I was dazed when she told me that he is not her boyfriend. The first thought that came to me was that she had multiple boyfriends and that was one of her flings.

I was still concerned and on pressing further, she told me though they love each other, they can never marry because she is suffering from Sickle Cell Disease and the guy is AS, so she doesn’t want to bring a child to this world to suffer considering all that she is going through. Moreover, the doctors have told her that her chance of giving birth successfully is very thin.

She said her case is so bad that apart from being on daily medications and regular injections, she ends up being admitted in the hospital very regularly and her parents have spent so much on her. She also said that she just started walking normally having been on a walking aid for over 3 months.

Another shocking thing she said to me was that knowing she has a very short time left, she has made up her mind to live life to the fullest. She regularly has her therapy sessions with her doctor, physiotherapist and psychologist and is prepared for death whenever that will happen.

When I asked her if she believed a miracle could still happen and her health status could change, she said unfortunately, she doesn’t believe in miracles.

It was in the course of our conversation that I opened up to her about the one and only girl I ever loved who died from this disease. I didn’t know when the tears dropped as I spoke glowingly about her. It has been over 12 years since she passed on but it still seems like yesterday. Maybe this is one of the reasons I have not opened up my heart to love again. I hope to tell this story someday ...

I am yet to recover from the pain.....
Let me stop here before i start crying again....

  2. Awwwwwn. This story made me almost shed a tear. I have also lost loved ones to this disease.
I don't think love is enough to make one marry especially when it relates to health issues as per AS marrying AS.
I beg to ask this question... Has medicine not advanced enough to cure this ailment? Life...

    1. There is a cure for it.....Bone marrow transplant from a close relative. But it's very expensive and the risk is high both for donor and recipient.

The best cute is to know your genotype and marry accordingly

    2. You only live once.
May God make her case easy.

    3. Having a sibling who has this condition and living with the pain of seeing her in pains is heartbreaking. People in relationships should check out their genotype and get a 3rd or 4th opinion if they can afford it, Nigerian labs are not trustworthy.

And yes, there's a cure, bone marrow transplant, stem cell transplant, and the most recent promising procedure - Gene therapy. But these are expensive and not available in our clime. And for families like mine, it is not an option in the near future unless, there's a drastic positive change in our finances.
We are yet to do the hip replacement surgery for my sister due to lack of funds even though it is can be done here at UPTH and Kelsy Harrison hospital.

SCD is an expensive condition, intending couples should avoid it at all cost cos LOVE is never enough.

  4. Tell her not to lose trust in God. It's not in her place to decide her time on earth.

  6. Lol πŸ˜‚πŸ€£πŸ˜‚, why did I find your love story funny instead of empathizing with you?
In my head, you seem to me as a 'player' incapable of truly loving someone.

I feel for the lady though. She may end up living for a long time.

Please if you're AS, please stay away from AS please. I had an experience with a roommate ones, this girl was almost breathing her last. The sight hunt me till today

I always wish there was something that could be done to change their genotype

    1. In my University days, there was this Prof that had 5 children out of which 4 were SS. It was really tough for that family because the children were always on and out of hospital. Eventually, they lost 2 of the children. Very wonderful family.
To me, the best thing is that AS and AS should not just marry me matter how much in love they might be. My 2 cents

My first daughter is abt to get married. I don't fall sick always. I fall sick at least once in a year. So people living with sickle cell can live long and also hv kids of their own. I will soon carry my grandchildren. Sickle cell is not a death sentence. Many ppl with the disease are doing fine. Yes...she can have her own kids

  12. That is how i was chatting with a guy here on single and mingle because i stated clearly that am an ss.... This guy called me stupid just because i missed a day call conversation! I was mad, he went as far as saying as an ss i will life earth soon. Infact he does not know we are the strongest on earth. Knowing pains since birth and being on drugs and suppliments every damn day is no joke. I know i will find true love this year but i want my man to see me for who i am and not for empathy sake. Na God get life and death!!!

  14. This SS thing is so sad. The love of my life and I are both AS. I have friends that are SS and I've seen what they've been through, and so I told myself that I woulhh't put my kids in that kind of danger. We have since moved on, buy what I've come to realize is that AS and AS or SS and AS love can be too sweet. It's the trick of devil. Run away so that your kids wouldn't become victims
