EX Gov Okorocha Sues Nigerian Govt And Demands N1bn After Arrest By EFCC

Former Governor Rochas Okorocha has dragged the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to court for alleged breach of his fundamental human rights.

Okorocha took out the suit over the alleged invasion of his Abuja residence by operatives of the EFCC last week.

On Tuesday, May 24, 2022, EFCC officials had laid a six-hour siege on Okorocha’s residence in Maitama; an up-scale part of Abuja. Although a few protesters had stormed the location to protest his arrest; the development did not stop the EFCC from whisking him away.

Equally important, the EFCC claimed that the arrest of Okorocha followed his alleged refusal to make himself available for trial; with the commission adding that it had to forcefully arrest Okorocha after he jumped an administrative bail granted to him by the commission.

The EFCC also disclosed that Okorocha artfully evaded service of court papers over his trial; noting that he faces charges of conspiracy, stealing, and laundering N2.9 billion of Imo State funds.

In the suit filed by the sitting Senator, He accused the EFCC of illegally invading his home and added that operatives of the commission deprived him and members of his family access to their private and family life; while noting that his residence was under siege by heavily armed men.

Consequently, he is praying the court to declare the action as an infringement of his fundamental rights; while praying for a perpetual injunction restraining the respondents from arresting, detaining or keeping him in custody. In addition, he is seeking the sum of N1 billion as general damages, while also requesting a public apology from the EFCC.
