Hospital Explains That Client Who Had Liposuction Died After '' A Very Rare Acute Blood Transfusion Reaction''

MUST READ.....

A Lagos-based medical facility, Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Clinics, has reacted to the allegations of negligence following the death of one of its clients.

On Thursday, a Nigerian lady took to Twitter to allege that a surgeon neglected a female friend of hers who she said had complained of bleeding after she underwent liposuction at the facility.

Liposuction is a technique that removes excess fat from under the skin by suction for a possible transfer.

The accuser shared what appeared to be pre and post-surgery photos, evidencing butt enlargement and slim waist.

She said the medical centre only opened up on what transpired after the deceased, identified as Crystabel, was discovered to have been missing for days.

In a press statement. Cynosure opened up on the post-surgery complications that led to the victim’s death.

“Her blood levels were adequate. Her renal and liver functions were normal. She was stable and doing well after the surgery, was seen walking around, and was visited by a friend as well,” the medical centre said.

“She was with us for four days when, on the 4th day during the ward rounds, it was observed that she was symptomatically anaemic despite earlier interventions to prevent that.

“Her PCV was checked and rechecked and it was low, which was attributed to the loss from intra-operation and from daily lymphatic drainage massage following the liposuction procedure.

“She was informed about the situation and assured that we were initiating blood transfusion and she consented.”

It added that the patient was properly investigated pre-surgery and her indicators came out as normal.

Cynosure said the client lost blood after the surgery, a development it said was normal in such procedures.

The hospital said it put mechanisms in place for a blood transfusion but the patient would later suffer “a very rare acute blood transfusion reaction” evidenced by her dark-coloured urine and the findings on her chest examination.

Cynosure added that it couldn’t immediately reach her family when she passed away due to wrong contact details.

“Ten units after the completion, a post-transfusion vitals check revealed that she had a fever, which she was promptly managed with antipyretic drugs and steroids to stop any amount of reaction,” the hospital said.

“This was late in the evening on the 4th-day post-op. (30th May 2022). About four hours after the transfusion, she started complaining of chest tightness and difficulty breathing.

“She was coughing with the production of a thick frothy yellow sputum in the early hours of the 5th day, having suffered a very rare acute blood transfusion reaction.

“As the day progressed, she took a turn as her lung function was no longer clinically improving despite being on 100% oxygen at high flows whilst fully conscious and communicative.”

The hospital further stated that it had attempted to transfer the patient to an ICU but she died in the process.

The clinic said it had invited the police after the family’s reaction had caused a temporary breakdown of law and order.

“The blood bank was contacted to rerun the group and cross-matching on her blood samples whilst we also sent a sample of her blood and remnants of the transfused blood to another blood bank for quality control”, it added.

“The results revealed they were compatible based on the routine blood grouping and cross-matching methods available in-country at the moment.

“A Coombs test was carried out as part of our follow-up to prove the situation.

“[It] returned positive, indicative of auto-immune hemolytic anaemia (AIHA) which is a condition where the immune system of a person attacks their own red blood cells, especially after previous sensitization.

“We would like to express our support for the family in their quest for an autopsy,” it concluded.

    1. Yes. Not every patient comes outta the hospital alive.
Me thinks she died of an embolism, prolly fat got its way to her artery and blocked it, cos chest pain and lack of air is a sign of heart issues. Yikes

It doesn’t matter cosmetic or life saving surgery, if the hospital is at fault that’s what it is

    5. High time people knew that signing documents to get involved in any fatal probable activity for pleasure sake is equally suicide. If you don’t value the life God gave you and you throw it away to please the internet, the same internet will send their vague condolences to the bereaved family you left behind; the next minute, they move on from you to the another trending story.

Liposuction is a risky surgery but sociomedium is trivialising it.

    8. Always weigh the risk vs the benefits. U see the kind of money and the life Kenebi Okoko had, nothing should have made him do that surgery especially in Nigeria. Except it was life threatening

    2. From their statement, the hospital did all that. This is a rare occurrence as no hospital in the world can test for all the red blood cell markers at once. They test for the common ones then few of the ones common amongst certain populations but the are quite a number of them from med school days doing clinical chemistry.

A surgery is a surgery no matter what purpose it is for. Is always a risky procedure. Even the best of surgical teams report these kinds of casualties.

  7. Doctors are not God. Complications can follow any surgery anywhere in Nigeria. That is why you sign consent to surgeries. Most people do not take time to read the contents of such "consent forms
It was same surgery that that obj's wife went to Spain (of all places) to do and did not come out of the theater.

I think this is the issue right here
They used tests available in the countr at the moment
Are they saying other countries have more detailed testing? If you don’t have the detailed testing then it’s not safe to carry out the surgery in your faculty bc there’s a chance you’ll miss something

Yes surgery can have complications but no one should die for things that can be ruled out
They also said they noticed she deteriorated while making rounds. What? If she was already in distress she should be under constant monitoring
      What do they mean discovered
      They should pay

    3. Blood grouping and cross match is a routine blood test mandatory for pre - op investigations everywhere in the world, Coombs test is only required when you want to carry out an investigation on the cause of a blood related symptom. Example you're transfusing and there's bleeding from any orifices, the patient is anemic despite transfusion like in this case.

    4. 15:05 it’s not only done when symptoms have already started

    5. If true, it is a full excuse.

If your comment is followed, no surgery would be done in Nigeria.

The real question is whether what the hospital's said is true.

      Delete
    6. 15:55 that’s not correct
There are surgeries we are completely equipped for
For the others, there’s no need to take a chance especially if it’s not an emergency

    7. The tests they use are what the guidelines in Nigeria stipulate. Just as sickle cell in Nigeria is a big issue, in the Mediterranean region, theirs is thalassemia so the tests differ in that way. Every country will have it's own because some of these antigens are common to certain races or populations. It would be a non issue in court as most facilities in the world can't test for every single antigen. The cost will make surgeries financially inaccessible. And some crossreactions are so mild that few patients can easily survive till when resensitized eg Rhesus which kills fetus after the first positive one survived.

These pll already look good, nothing wrong with them yet they are so hellbent on getting surgery by any means necessary. If the local surgeons reject them they will fly elsewhere to get it at all cost.

  18. I wish they didn’t publish this, this is an admission of guilt. The young lady should have been intubated and put on a ventilator and then you buy time to figure out what’s going on. The real question is what ‘attempt’ was made to transfer her and how long did it take to make that decision to ‘attempt’ to transfer her given what sounds like a rapid decompensation?
Ladies, if you must do a totally elective procedure like cosmetic surgery, pls at least do it at a place where there are ICU facilities, if you don’t have the funds tell yourself you are not ready yet and take the time to get your funds together. It is an elective procedure, meaning, it can wait.Complications happen but they can be handled at a facility with appropriate services and by that I mean a well functioning ICU with TRAINED nursing staff and an anesthesiologist. This girl would have been alive today even in Ghana, next door. Such a pity. Too many young ladies dying from this, the surgery is one thing but the post op care is quite another. As you research the surgeon please also ask him where he does his surgeries and what he does to handle acute post op emergencies….and listen to what he says and how he says it. Nne if there is any hesitation for that part, run for your life. It could be you next. He who has ears let them hear.

    1. Grest advice. Waking up from the anaethesia is only half the battle.

Every surgery takes a toll on the body. Surgeons are cutting through flesh, nerves, cutting, digging, pulling and tugging into the body to do what they need to. In the case of implants they are putting foreign objects in the body and hoping the body accept it, and the outcome is visually pleasant. Then the patient has to care for their drainage bags and keep the area safe from infections, take their medication and hope that scar tissues and keloids don't form at the surgical site. Whew!

    2. Even in a ventilator with CPAP, she didn't have the red blood cells to carry oxygen to vital organs. It won't have changed anything. I agree with your opinion of using only facilities with the capacity to manage complications though.

      Delete
    3. I disagree....a ventilator may have changed her outcome, I don't love ventilators but they are a necessary "evil" to keep someone alive while figuring out what the heck is going on and formulate a concrete treatment plan. Sounds like she died of respiratory failure. I didn't hear them mention that she had a Chest Xray or Chest CT scan as they said the lady was short of breath and coughing--would be helpful to look at the lungs and see if there is any pathology there to address, for example fluid or clot. If she were on a ventilator when the diagnosis of AIHA was made, they could have started steroids which is part of treatment of AIHA while looking for an appropriately matched blood type. She was a very young lady, her organs have good reserve. These things are not easy to do when the facility you are in, does not have a CXR machine, not to talk of a CT scan. Medicine is not juju, you have to do investigations to make diagnoses. So please, put yourself in a facility that has the ability to escalate things quickly and get the results that will save your life. Otherwise manage your fupa like that, it's actually sexy. Anyway, the good lady is gone as many before her, may their soul rest in peace and may the living learn from the lessons of the dead, Amen!
