Speaking to journalists at their home in Abuja on Tuesday, Asia said the family supported Tinubu strongly during the 2023 election campaign. She explained that they worked hard in Kaduna State and stood by him, but now the family is going through a lot of stress.
She made it clear that they are not asking the president to stop the court case or interfere with the law. Instead, they want basic rights for El-Rufai, such as proper medical care, access to his lawyers and family, and bail that he can meet. “If he is guilty, let the court decide. If innocent, let the court decide too,” she said.
Seated by her side was Aichatou, another of El-Rufai's. The family said they live in constant fear and have faced trauma from the situation.
Nasir El-Rufai has been in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) since February over claims of financial issues from his time as governor.
His case is still in court.
