Nigerian Govt Summons Ivorien Ambassador Over Death Of Trader Detained Without Trial In Abidjan

The Nigerian Government has summoned the Ivorien Ambassador to Nigeria, Kalilou Traore, over the tragic death of Usama Murtala, a young trader who died after being detained without trial in Prison.

Usama was among six Nigerians who travelled from Sokoto to Abidjan in August 2025 for business but were arrested on arrival and held under harsh conditions.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu‑Ojukwu, demanded compensation for Usama’s family and condemned the detention that left two survivors critically ill from malnutrition, as they were reportedly fed once a day.

Four of the detainees have now been released following diplomatic pressure from the Nigerian Mission and the ministry..
