Two years ago, I saw a fertility company in Lagos that needed surrogate mothers. I had just gone through a financially rough period in my life, and I needed some money to get back on my feet.
I remember getting to the office. It was a storey building, with the women who were already in the programme occupying the upstairs, while the company occupied the ground floor.
The person in charge was a giant-looking woman who was munching on a big pizza and drinking Coke.
She started lecturing me about everything the process entailed, and at that point, I lost interest.
First, I realised you cannot do it solely for monetary gain. The pay was very low. You do it for humanity's sake because many things could happen.
The birth would be through a Caesarean section. Once you got into the programme and were confirmed pregnant, you could no longer go home. Your family couldn't come to see you either. They believed your family might convince you to change your mind or do something to the baby.
You wouldn't get to meet the intended parents or the baby after birth. And the worst part? If you died, that was considered your risk. There would be no compensation for your family. In fact, if there was a life-and-death situation during delivery, the baby would come first before you.
By the time she was done orienting me, I told her I would get back to her. I entered the next available vehicle and returned to my city.
Three days later, she called me to say that there were new parents and that she had shared my history with them. They preferred me.
Bear in mind, I had taken some medical fitness tests before the orientation, and I had been certified healthy for the procedure.
I told her I was no longer interested.
The way the woman even presented it to you would make everyone run away.. Maybe if you had told us how much you were offered we would look at the amount and the risks mentioned...

My first slept off in my bed and I tried to carry him to his room, I struggled so bad to lift him up to a sitting position and I couldn’t carry him on my shoulders the same way I have carried him for years.
I just sat down on the bed with him sleeping in my hands and I tried holding him in that position for a little while longer, I wanted to savour the moment. I couldn’t help it, as the tears dropped, I remembered when he was a new born and how little and wrinkled he was.
How I was learning how to hold him properly, I remembered how I felt the first day I held him in my hands. I remembered all the times I complained about how he didn’t like to be dropped and he always slept in my arms or back as a baby and toddler.
Now my baby is a boy too big for me to carry upright over my shoulders.
I can’t believe I am saying this, I miss the toddler him.... I have stopped complaining about my three year old who still likes to be carried a lot. Soon she will be too big to be backed like that too, so I am enjoying this stage and cherishing it more dearly.
Na so e be for everyone mum...After all the complaints of cant wait for them to grow up, when they grow up, you complain of missing them....

I just feel for the pupils. The education system here is very poor and this extended break will make things even more difficult for them
