Youths And Native Doctors Protest Against Benin Electricity Distribution
Groups of youth and men in native doctors attire on Thursday stormed Sapele local government secretariat to protest against the renewal of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company operational licence.
The protesters urged the local government to avoid being compromised and demanded for the non-extension of the licence of Vigeo Holdings Limited, the firm in charge.
They said the company has not added any value to what it met, adding that the region has been groaning under heavy estimated bills with deliberate non-supply of meters.
The groups also said the BEDC has refused to provide transformers and electrical poles including ancillaries. The group described the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) reported one-year extension of the company’s licence as unacceptable.

The power situation in Benin is a sad one. It's more like people are taking a step forward and Benin is taking ten steps backwards as regard power supply. Since i came in three days ago the power supply doesn't exceed two hours per day and i was told it's better now as prior to the day i arrived they've not had light for three weeks. To think I'm relocating here next year, I wonder how i will cope but then i console myself with the fact that people living here don't have ten heads.
Power problems in Nigeria is the dumbest thing ever. This is a country with oil, lots of rivers, and copious amounts of sunlight and still the nation cannot be electrified 24/7/365. Generator fumes is slowly killing ppl's lungs and the noise pollution from them is creating undue stress in the body.
