"Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family," the queen said in the statement put out by Buckingham Palace.
"My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan's desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family," she continued.
The queen, Harry, his brother William and his father Prince Charles had been meeting at the queen's estate in Sandringham, England in a family summit called after Harry and Meghan said they wanted to pull out of their "senior" royal duties and spend more time in North America. CBS News was told that Meghan might have taken part in the meeting by phone.
"Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives," the queen's statement said.
"It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK.
"These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days," she concluded.
In Monday's meeting, the monarch and the senior members of her family were expected to try and hash out Harry and Meghan's role going forward, including who's to pay for their transatlantic lifestyle. Details include the kind of security they'll need — something that, until now has been paid for by British taxpayers, how they'll be able to keep their home near Windsor Castle, Frogmore Cottage, and what commercial deals they'll be allowed to strike.
The crisis has sparked frenzied speculation in the media, from a backlash aimed at Meghan, to claims that she and Harry felt "bullied" by Prince William.
The brothers firmly denied that claim in a statement issued Monday morning, but there has been tension between them, felt by Prince William, according to royal reporter Roya Nikkhah.
"I think he (Prince William) feels very sad that there's been this split that's seen them go into what he describes as separate entities. He talked about not being able to put his arm around his brother anymore and that makes him sad," Nikkhah said.

ReplyDeleteI doubt, they learned their lessons from Charles & Diana's story. You cannot perpetually control human beings, especially fully grown adults. The Queen knows that by now. Didn't work for Charles and wouldn't work for Harry. Life is not perfect, wasn't intended to be. There is always that prince who will reject the throne, there is always that prince who will fall in love with a peasant. All those fairytales we read in childhood are stories of life. If I were the Queen, I wouldn't bother much, let them go but make sure they come for holidays and keep in touch. Every family has their own disputes & wahala, royalty is not excluded. Life is not perfect.

Maybe the way they went about it wasn't that great, maybe they felt they had no alternative. But when you think about the fact that Charles @ 70+ is still waiting to be king and consider how long William will have to wait, you wonder what will happen to the spare. So, he and a wife who has always worked for her money, should be content with just sitting down for the next how many decades (considering that they're not yet 40 and all things being equal)? As what, please? Even decree from God, sometimes we beg for leeway. Certain things cannot be done to certain people at all or without consequences. This one was financially independent, understood from the start that (unless something verrry bad or unusual happens) she would never be queen, didn't sign a prenup and seems to have a track record of ghosting people - this is not Diana 2.0! Diana (reportedly) cried so much when she lost her title, that William said, "Don't worry, mummy, I'll give it back to you when I become king." If she was alive, she for still dey wait. This one seems ready to leave title, country and the marriage sef. There are some kind of play you don't play with some kinds of people.
A lot of women are annoyed cos they know they can't try half of this, so secretly envy Meghan's guts. Meghan and Harry will learn new things (including who their true friends are) and make some errors as they navigate uncharted waters, but they've demonstrated to the whole world that "some things that everyone thinks are set in stone, are actually negotiable afterall". If you don't try (cos of "what people will say"), you will never know.

ReplyDeleteHarry and Meghan will obviously not be the first or only ones among the existing crop of royals who would be working per se. That was never the problem. The outcry was mainly because of the manner in which it was handled and the attitude displayed.
Also for those who come here shouting that members of the royal do not work and sit around eating tax payers money, I wonder where or how you all reached that conclusion because in real life the British Royal family attends thousands of engagements a year while leading charities, taking care of children, and even working 9 to 5. You obviously have no idea what the monarchy means to a Briton and the respect the queen commands among her subjects and also how they foster national unity.
Those who will grumble and condemn, will. Those who will sit back and reflect will. and that is what the Queen has done.
