Hmmm....
ADVICE NEEDED FOR NOISE POLLUTION
Hi, Please I need advice to deal with noise in my neighbourhood:
I rented an apartment close to a mosque which was then partially demolished and not functional.
It used to be quiet until a month ago when they completed lots of repairs on their building and installed a loud speaker outside. All they do now is sing loudly and canvass for donations to complete the mosque.
They even go as far as calling individuals donor’s contribution, and this goes on very loudly for hours. I have never been so frustrated all my life. Why do they feel comfortable disturbing others because they want money to build?
I can hardly focus as I work from home mostly. Every morning I am jolted out of my sleep by the noise they make, and this goes on endlessly during the day.
Please, I need advice.
*This is so horrible..Can you not move out of the area? I dont know if there is anything you can do....even Churches too cause this noise pollution and their own is worse.....
Move out of the area please!
Anything you do will be misconstrued. Just move out and ask the landlord to refund you your balance.
ReplyDeleteIf i hear say the landlord refund am.
DeleteReport them and start making plans to move out.
This shit is so frustrating, the speakers mounted in my church scares the shit out of me, I fear for the ear drums of my kids and I. I try to sit at the back but ushers will keep asking you to move forward close to those woofers #shudders
This menace happens a lot at places of worship, seriously it needs to stop.
@Gifty, you're not alone. The church speakers are deadly to the ear drums. At times I pity the neighbours during night vigils. God help Africa oh.
DeleteGifty, if I were you I won't move an inch, dem go talk tire
DeleteREAL NOISE CANCELLATION EARPHONES, when rent expires MOVE!
Delete*Politely speak to them while giving them a little donation.
ReplyDelete*Plead with your Muslim friends to try speaking to them, they can claim they're the ones living there.
*Ask a lawyer to write to them for public nuisance/disturbance.
*File a complaint with the Ministry of Environment.
*File a complaint in Court for public nuisance/disturbance
*Simply move out and ask your landlord for a refund of your rent balance.
*Endure till your rent expires, then run.
Good luck.
Please move out from there when your rent expire before the bad ones among them accuse you of blasphemy when you react.
ReplyDeleteI thought Moslems usually hold their prayers session Fridays. I don't know it's everyday.
The one closer to me is a Pentecostal church and even on Sunday they do night vigil as well. Once they start, I don't sleep anymore.
Just 'vigil' not 'night vigil'.
DeleteThe fastest solution...donate the remainder of the money needed to complete the mosque, so that they will stop soliciting! 😅ðŸ¤ðŸ¤ª
ReplyDeleteDon't mind me...I know you are upset. Hopefully, someone gives you practical advice, as I know nothing about how these things work in Nigeria!
They won't stop even if donated huge amounts and I don't think poster will be able to fund the total bills. This was my story then in my area in Coker village before leaving Lagos. So frustrating.
DeleteMove out Asap before you do or say something that they might lynch or stone you for. Be very careful.
ReplyDeleteBeen there before poster,. just give it some time. A few months maybe. You'll get used it. Wear earbuds or earpieces as much as you can while playing your favourite music
ReplyDeleteSame problem I have with clubs been in residential areas. Very irritating.
ReplyDeleteWhich kind area be that?
DeleteUnless na all those local clubs which one shouldn't even call a club..
All clubs I know have sound proof.. you won't even hear any sound of music outside the door
No Stella, she shouldn’t move out anything.
ReplyDeleteOP, i am a Hausa Muslim from the core North, and if i was living in your area, i would complain about it. What they are doing is unislamic. Please before you report them or conclude that you would be misconstrued, make an attempt to complain to the person in charge of the mosque first, from his response to you, you would know what steps to take next.
Firstly, wait till it is time for prayer, as soon as you see them leaving mosque, ask to see the imam please, when you see him, tell him you live close by and the noise they make really bothers you, so you are asking that they kindly consider the rights of neighbours both muslims and non muslims, if he assures you they would stop, fine, if not please take it up.
Like i said, what they are doing is unislamic, if they refuse to adjust, you can take whatever legal measures you deem fit. Goodluck!
This was what I did in respect of a church after service noise.
DeleteAfter service, the children practiced drumming. I went to complain to the Pastor. I felt that noise after service hours was too much on the service period noise.
Did I complain about the during service noise, no.
If I am the Poster, will I complain about the mosque noise, no.
The noise may be un-islamic. But since it is being made consistently, the Imam in charge does not know (with all due respect to him). Since he does not know, the Poster who is not a Muslim cannot teach him. Any attempt by Poster to do so may not yield a middle result. The man may agree or reject it. The latter may not be too good for Poster.
Recently, a video trended on the stoning of a very high ranking oba palace because of religious matter.
Religious matters (especially Christian and Islam) are very sensitive in Nigeria.
Poster save to relocate far from a church or mosque.
Before we hear say, let me clear that I am a Christian
Poster if you love yourself, please don't take this advice, it will do you more harm than good. It almost resulted to tragedy for someone I pleaded on her behalf about 2 years ago. If you can manage for the meantime and plan on moving out upon your rent expiry, please do so.
DeleteI noticed that you won't find such happening in highbrow areas here in Abuja but not in the suburbs. Churches and Mosques in town are regulated unlike those in the suburbs. When I just came to Abuja to serve, I lived in the suburb for few weeks before I moved out. Where I lived, I was surrounded by Living Faith, RCCG and Christ Holy Church and their noise was out of this world. The first Friday I spent there was like hell cos of the vigil. I complained to my friend who I was squatting with but he told me that he has complained a lot of time and even if I try, they will say it's because I'm a Moslem.
I talked to the landlord after their Sunday service, he said I would enjoy it if I'm a Christian but seriously there's nothing to enjoy there. It was just pure noise, music or preaching coming from 3 different speakers, so incoherent. This hastened my search for apartment and I didn't even stay beyond 3 weeks. I live very close to the Christian Cathedral now and I hardly hear a thing or get disturbed by noise.
Don’t start what you can’t finish.
ReplyDeleteBetter you move out.
Don’t report for your own safety
They won’t see it from your point of view rather they will think you are not pure( this is applicable to both religion
Very true. Christians will say their prayers are setting fire on you. The Muslim will see you as enemy of progress as you don't want them to finish up the mosque. If you are in Lagos State, Yoruba majority members of either group will say you are asserting too much rights though not an omo onile.
DeleteHow is church noise worse?
ReplyDeleteOkay, not worse but the same.
DeleteIt's worse, we use musical instruments, Muslims hardly use musical instruments except small drums and that their traditional guitar.
DeleteGet a other apartment please. Your health is more important than the outstanding rent. You will be surprised you will get a better place than where you are because most times the fear of the unknown keep us in a place when we are suppose to.move.
ReplyDeletePele dear, you have to start planning to move out, that is the only solution.
ReplyDeleteIt's not that easy to up and leave a house to another one. Certain things are involved, moving from one apartment to another isn't as easy as it seems.
ReplyDeleteDo you mean they do these at every hour of the day and not at specific times? Say, when it's their prayer time? If you can't manage then you move out
Stella do you have anything against the church?
ReplyDeleteHer complaint doesn't include the church.
Why would you ask such childish question? One cannot speak the truth again without you folks assuming that the person is an enemy of that which they are speaking against. Na wa o
DeletePlease dont go and beg them except you want to be killed.
ReplyDeleteIf possible endure, save and move out of that house or area.
As long as you live in Lagos, prepare for noise close to your house, everywhere I have lived in Lagos, it's either there is church close to my house or mosque, the one I am currently living in, there is church and mosque, what I do now is once they start there program,I will close my window
ReplyDeleteBut they can't be doing that like everyday the whole day.. Maybe they started that during their fasting period.. If that's the case, then I think you will have to endeoure and be a little more patient until they are through with it. But if after their fasting, nothing changes. Then I will suggest that you look for ways to move out. Because, if you complain to any of them, they will ask if you are the only person living there. In all you do, please be very careful.. People are not smiling these days.

Lol.this reminds me of my former place of abode. We had about 3 mosques surrounding us. Trust me you don't need an alarm clock to wake you up. We eventually moved out to a better area with less noise. We were particular of the surroundings when we were house hunting the second time. Though there's a club close to us but the sound is controlled. Probably because The residents clamouring when the landlady agreed that the ppty be turned to a club. In Nigeria little is done to noise pollution.
ReplyDeleteThere must be a government agency to deal with this. Can you not report anonymously? Life is already too stressful for this bullshit. Thank God this is illegal where I live and ppl can have their auditory peace. Just because it is religious doesn't mean it need to be a disturbance to the entire neighbourhood, God is not hard of hearing.
ReplyDeleteI can relate with how you feel poster. My compound own is generator (2) running over night. The kind of headache I feel this days for disturbed sleep/sleep disorder, na God hand I dey. I told my husband that I want to approach the people running generator like that but he said no. It will bring quarrel he doesn't want trouble.he said I should channel my energy to nepa, I should tell them to be giving us regular power supply so neighbors won't on generator.
ReplyDeleteI ask am which part of speech is that? Because what me can see is present impossible tense.
It is well with me.
This one won't work naa. Telling neighbors to put off their gen and sleep with heat, no way.
DeleteLol at present IMPOSSIBLE tense. Nepa don't fall hand no be today.
DeleteMy dear you can close your windows when they start but if the noise persist pack out
ReplyDeleteAs it is now ehh, the only solution is to bear it while you look for another house to rent.
ReplyDeleteI'm the poster. Thank you for sharing, Stella, and thank you all for the advice.
ReplyDeleteMoving out is not an option for me now. I went through a lot of hassle, for more than a month looking for apartments. This one was one of the best in terms of conduciveness and location.
My wife too has been against me taking any action. Having heard from this good community, I think I have to endure the noise until I'm able to move out. Thank you again guys.
Lagos state has a very effective law against noise pollution, pls report them, and they are very responsive too.
ReplyDeleteYes Lagos does
Deletei dont know i find this chronicles funny kikikikikiki sorry ooo
ReplyDeletePerson just pay rent and all of una dey shout move out as if the money falls from trees. Poster go to the Environmental protection agency and report anonymously. Don't move out unless you have money to do so
