The project falls under the Green Economy Empowerment 774 (GEE774) programme and targets all the 774 local government areas, with 5,000 cookstoves planned for each area.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, described the move as part of efforts to support women, promote green jobs, fight climate change, and improve family health.
These solar cookstoves use sunlight to cook food instead of firewood, charcoal, or gas. They help cut down indoor smoke, which is a major health risk. Reports show that indoor air pollution from traditional cooking causes around 95,000 deaths each year in Nigeria, mostly affecting women and children.
The cookstoves also reduce the need to cut trees for fuel, helping the environment and lowering carbon emissions. Each unit can offset about 4.5 tons of CO2 per year.
