Ex Baby Mama Omawunmi Says No One Has A Right To Question A Woman's Decision To Have Kids Out Of Wedlock

Nigerian singer Omawumi has revealed in an interview with TVC that she doesn't see anything morally wrong for a woman to decide to just have kids without being married.

”I did it. I was a baby mama for four years before Papa Kamila decided to marry me (referring to her husband). I was a baby mama for four years and I decided and said I don’t want to marry until we are good and ready.” she said

Omawumi added that nobody has the right to question a woman’s decision to have kids outside wedlock ....

*I dont see anything wrong with being a baby mama or being called one... Marriage doesnt happen for everyone and some want kids, what do they do?

Let each person live their lives so far they arent harming anyone. Not everyone will get married and not everyone married will stay married; so if as a woman u want to be a mother,by all means make it happen so far u are financially and mentally ready becos its not an easy journey. And if d father is still in ur life u can co-parent. In my opinion a child is better in a stable loving and financial secure single parent household than being in a toxic, unhealthy and lacking 2 parent home.

No one knows anyone's full story.
I am not going to judge anyone for being "baby mama"
I will rather advise anyone/everyone to make the right choices. If you chose Christ, worship him. If you chose the world, it is your choice and you are responsible and accountable to God one day. But do not chose Christ and go contrary to his teachings and principles and expect to be praised.
Whichever is your choice, it is still advisable; note that I use the word "advisable" to be patient until you are married to have sex.
In your case oma, your "baby daddy" married you. Not all women have it that way. A lot are in dire moral and psychological straights because of that choice.

  5. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with keeping a pregnancy. But her statement is not making sense. “I decided to be single” then “papa kamila decided to marry me”.

All she had to say was they weren’t ready when the first baby came...simple. Making it seem like it was her decision. Single parenthood is not easy at all. Successful co-parenting requires a lot of maturity. They should stop making it seem like it’s a great and joyful situation. I remember she called her baby daddy “yummy” when people were speculating about him being a married man, goes to show that they were in a relationship.

What I understand from her is, the husband wasn't ready for marriage so she decided to have her baby when she got pregnant, marriage or not, thankfully for her, marriage eventually happened between and her baby daddy.

I actually applaud women that make the best out of their circumstances and keep their heads high, statements like this is what pushes women to marry narcissists like the chronicles of yesterday and live miserable lives. Some things happened for you without any stress doesn't mean everyone had it that easy. Please, let's stop being insensitive.

    4. Some may find single parenting hard but there are so many married people especially women, that are running their household and raising their children as if they’re single parents. Married but lonely and single in the marriage. This actually happens more than you think. Or, the husband only contributes financially and that’s it. No sound relationship with his wife and children. Is a woman in such a marriage married or actually a single parent?

      Delete
    5. Anon 16:08, thanks for stating the obvious fact. MOST women in Nigeria are single mothers in reality no matter their marital status. A man with more than one wife has made a single mother of his 1st wife like pastor Reno who makes this kind of noise. You cannot afford to contribute one kobo to the children these women decide to have and they are not asking you to so please go and ask your wife for her 30 percent of the rent and leave adults to live their lives.

Abike Dabiri raised all her sons as a single mother and they are better placed than all the noisemakers and Bible wielders on this blog. Same with Bola Shagaya, Mrs Onyuike of NSE, Florence Ita Giwa and so many others. Single motherhood is not new in Nigeria, it is just that most women are now more honest about their situation and would prefer not to feed a man for a ring. Most of the armed bandits and unknown gunmen kidnappers and ritualists in Nigeria were raised in the "model" homes and look at the results. Akpan the murderer was raised in a complete household, just like most politicians. These women are not interested in having children for fathers that spend their time on gender wars on Stella's blog and just like before, their children will do as well as the single mothers who specialize in the chronicle lifestyle.

    7. 20:02, Abike Dabiri and the other ladies u named are the exception, not the rule. Check the stats and see that most of the delinquents we have in society come from polygamous and single parent homes. Some of those women u mentioned up there were actually married at one time or the other before things went south; meaning that they most probably didn't set out to be single mums. Single motherhood is an abberation and there is nothing to encourage there. Those married women u refer to as single mums, why are they still in the marriage? The facts speak for themselves. No need trying to turn the world upside down. God's values remain supreme. Take it or leave it.

Ppl are in tune with Christianity when it's 'peaches and cream'. When the chips are down, they opt for earthly wisdom. Pray tell, what is to say that that child u insist on having by all means will grow up purposeful in life or will even survive u? Will u play God on that one too? U can say that it is UR decision to have a child out of wedlock but DON'T try to justify it as Christian 'cos that is where u will get argument. Peace.

    1. Why don't you sit down and reason out these things yourself? Do you know that many of the things that some of you prudes here take as God's Word actually are not? But rather change with society's attitudes? Like the belief in monogamy which actually is not found anywhere in the Bible. Rather you have Ex 20:10 which clearly supports polygamy. Do you really know what fornication means? Find out the original meaning yourself and stop believing your pastor for a change! You owe it to yourself.

      Delete
    2. @15:47
I had to go and read Exodus 20:10 because I like to learn new Scriptures. I did not see anywhere it
      "supports polygamy".
Please read the teachings of Christ in Mark 10 and see that he made reference to how God intended
things to be "in the beginning"; God made them male and female and therefore shall a A man leave
his father and mother and be united with his WIFE"
. The entire thing he said were singular. He told them that there were things Moses permitted them
to do because of THEIR HARDNESS OF HEARTS not because they were God's Word.
And please you were wrong in your generalization, I don't have a "pastor," I read my Bible.
Let me paste Ex. 20:10 for you:
but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work,
neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals,
nor any foreigner residing in your towns.

  23. Baby mama syndrome is a bye product of Slavery, Jim Crow, segregation and racism where white men were taken from farm to farm, lynched, and later on jailed for misdemeanors as felonies. A felony on your Social security meant no good job and so they hauled away black guys creating a scarcity of enough black bachelors and an attitude of promiscuity in the black society by lowering their self esteem. Black women in America have always preferred black men and so you have 4 of them competing for the attention of each well educated one. The African way was polygamy but since it is illegal here, the girls “trapped” them lying at times they had no womb. The sociology of the syndrome is important to understand whether it’s something we should copy as it didn’t just happen. Up till now, black men are still more likely to be jailed for an offense a white guy will be fined for. Black women tradittionally prefer their men. It’s the rich black guys that want to “upgrade” to the white women like Tiger woods & some athletes, and it always ends badly. They need to teach black history in its entirety including colonization, apartheid, slavery, Jim Crow, Black Wakk street burnt down as far back as the 1920s so Nigerians know what to copy and what not to copy. Stella print this one. Omawummi does not have the depth of knowledge to advise you on that any more than on sagging & Ebonics ( gonna, am o etc), the pidgin of the Ghetto. We don’t have to continue the wicked legacy of slavery across the ocean. Africans practiced polygamy not baby mamarism and if you are single, don’t fret, it’s not a sickness, work hard and pray but don’t trap any man because marriage hasn’t happened. Freeze your eggs.

Ppl marry who they want to marry for whatever reason and I blv we shd leave them to that. Holding it against them for marrying Caucasian women is like fighting to keep a man. The question of 'upgrade' can only be a figment of the imagination of those with 'esteem' issues.

  24. Anon 12:32, I’m not writing to impress you or for grades. I’m an informed highly educated I dare say writer. Serena Williams dated many black football & basketball players who were intimidated and she fell for a confident less wealthy white man. Nobody holds it against her. If you really know this society you will realize that as a black woman you are considered less beautiful than your white peers. It’s the reason some black wealthy families here give the “talk” to our children about police from 16 years when they start driving and a second “talk” when they start dating. If all you do is spend weeks or months in America or years in predominantly Nigerian city areas, you won’t understand the second “talk”. If all successful no felony black professionals marry white, who will marry black girls? Ever seen that blacks forced most cosmetic companies to include black models. I rest my case you are a reason black dignity & black history need to be taught to every black person! FYI White surburban wealthy parents “talk” to their young professionals too.

It’s more than choice and I’m not holding marrying a Caucasian against anyone just providing the sociological background of baby mama syndrome, naming conventions, sagging, the role of the church as the center of liberation theology to free black folks from copying things that their forefathers would frown at. I know many armchair experts of the US who have no idea of how many things came to be. Next time just pass your comment as you didn’t see me “holding anything” against them, I stated facts. I have friends & kids of marriage age and the moment a white girl knows you have a future, they won’t leave black boys till marriage and yes, it’s usually a vertical move. I stand by my decades of life in “Wisteria lane desperate housewives suburbia” and those of my black friends and colleagues with grown up professionals in the suburbs here.

You don’t really understand the nuances and complexities of the US unless you school or live here for long. The white colonialists secured the bag so much so that the central bags of Francophone West Africa is in France as we speak. Give your own opinion, don’t piggyback on mine.

  25. You don’t know me & my circle if you did you won’t talk about “imagination of esteem issues”. That is an insult but I’ll pass. Go get well educated on black history before George Floyd. I meant “ Black Wall Street” in my first write up. The US is more complicated than it looks.

Not generalizing but do your research, it’s usually a vertical move and you mostly live in the gym or eat low calories (a good thing though) to keep a particular weight else they lose interest in you for the most part. You must not add weight o!

Let’s relax and not rudely piggyback on other people’s comments. It’s almost like every Nigerian is angry. It’s the governments fault. Not generalizing, go for any race you want. I use public figures as examples.

    ReplyDelete
  26. U just buttressed my point by saying, "if all successful no felony black professionals marry white, who will marry black girls?" Attacking black men for marrying whites easily comes across as coming from a place of pain for black women in particular; and that is why the likes of Serena can get off easier than the likes of Tiger Woods, for the same action. It's like the pain of a woman scorned. That is why I referred to it in terms of a woman fighting to keep a man. It smacks of an effort at bullying successful black men to keep it within their race. Where the men go in to marriage for such pathetic reasons as 'marrying up' I can understand the aggression but not if there's a genuine interest in an intended marriage partner.

I don't have to live a thousand years in a society for me to perceive its cultural nuances. A lot of u comment on Nigerian issues, do u live in Nigeria? Perceptions of beauty and prepping young adults for the future, for example, are pretty evident issues to anybody even averagely interested in studying American society or Black history, anyway, if those are the sort things u have in mind. Then speaking of Black dignity, pray tell me, who's the more dignified between a person who's sensitivities has him/her up in arms at every perception of a slight on their person; or one whose self confidence frustrates all such effort to slight? Being constantly aggressive as a result of both real and perceived affronts merely confirms to the other party, the power of the tool the latter has in their hand, to rile one up, at will. How dignified a position is that? I repeat, black ppl (especially men) marrying Caucasian women shd not be a subject of attack. I made that as a general comment and not to u in particular; just as my reference to 'esteem issues' is directed at ppl who absurdly blv within them that marrying white is marrying up. How a particular group of ppl perceives one is the former's choice. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. What matters is that a person knows their worth for what it is and functions accordingly.

About piggybacking on ur comment. Well, truth to tell, once u air ur view on a public forum like this, expect reactions. I believe we're all aware there's a 'reply' option to the comments, which we all tacitly endorse when we press 'submit'. Otherwise, we all might as well just keep our views to ourselves. Cheers.
